Thea Green was a 23-year-old jet-setting fashion editor for Tatler<\/em> magazine when she noticed something no one else had: She was grabbing last-minute speedy manicures between meetings on every trip to New York or LA\u2014nowhere back home in the U.K. offered that service for your nails yet. And just like that, Nails.Inc was born in 1999. Twenty-six years later, the company says it sells one nail polish every single minute.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She had no background in beauty and no business plan when she launched a 70-shade polish range and opened her first nail bar that year. But having watched her dad work his way up from a tea boy to a retail director gave her all the proof she needed that \u201chard work and a good idea could take you anywhere,\u201d Green tells Fortune<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vogue<\/em> magazine\u2019s HQ was just around the corner, and staff there started combining client meetings with manicures. The lines quickly followed.<\/p>\n

Fenwick\u2019s came next, the first department store to give Green\u2019s business a beauty concession\u2014it marked the first time a service, rather than a product, sat in a beauty hall. \u201cPeople worried women wouldn\u2019t want to get their nails done in public, but I knew convenience would win over privacy,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harvey Nichols and Selfridges came next, before she decided to start selling to the masses and selling her nail varnish in major retailers: Boots in the U.K, Sephora in the U.S.<\/p>\n

By the late 2000s, she was expanding in the U.S. and needed to build awareness on a tight budget. Green turned to collaborations before most beauty brands were doing it. \u201cAlexa Chung was one of our first, and it flew off the shelves,\u201d she adds. Then came collaborations with Victoria Beckham, Magnum, even McDonald\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And she did it all while raising a family: two sons and a daughter. She\u2019d go through her emails before they woke up, split the school run with her husband (who also happens to be an entrepreneur), do calls on the way back home from the office, and log back on after bath time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, the 50-year-old founder lives in leafy West London with her husband, three children, and dog named Sunday. Green sold Nails.Inc at the end of 2024 to the American private equity group Pacific World Corporation in a reported \u00a330 million ($40 million) deal\u2014but she\u2019s stayed on as chair. She says the company achieved its highest ever turnover in 2025 at $34.7 million, \u201cand every signal points to that being surpassed in 2026.\u201d Meanwhile, its products are now stocked in over 30 countries, with its newest range, It\u2019s Topless, selling at a rate of one bottle a minute in the U.K. alone.<\/p>\n

But when she looks back, she says the proudest moments aren\u2019t the big deals; they\u2019re often the smaller ones along the way: \u201cThe first queue outside the bar. A customer asking for a shade by name when we had only been live for a few weeks. It\u2019s important to celebrate those small wins\u2014they\u2019re the things that get you to the big ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best financial decision you\u2019ve ever made\u2014and how much did it make or save you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Holding my nerve on pricing. Every instinct when you\u2019re young and unknown is to price low and win on volume. Resisting that let us build real brand equity\u2014worth far more in the long run than any single deal.<\/p>\n

And the worst?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ordering against excitement rather than confirmed demand. If I was doing it again I would launch with a tighter assortment\u2014you can always expand the range later.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s in your wallet?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not cash. Club memberships and stamps, as I love sending family and friends cards.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the one area of your life where you\u2019re surprisingly tight with money, even now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t bear to waste money on anything that doesn\u2019t have a long shelf life: plastic toys, tech games that go out of fashion, clutter. Only flowers can be regularly replaced, everything else should be built to last<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your most ridiculous ongoing expense?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I seem to buy a lot of AirPods as I often lose one\u2014ridiculous product but too convenient to ditch.<\/p>\n

Do you invest in shares?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. I invest in boring stuff, not trends, and I play the long game. I invest with my husband in the stock market, and then I have made some investments in a number of exciting female founder businesses: Better Menopause, Luna Daily, Dot Dot Bubble Tea.<\/p>\n

What personal finance advice would you give your 20-year-old self?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Save early; if it\u2019s not keeping you up at night, you don\u2019t need it. Teach kids to save and invest as our schools don\u2019t!<\/p>\n

The Routine\u00a0<\/h2>\n

What are your living arrangements like: Swanky apartment in the city or suburban sprawling?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I live in West London with my husband and three children. The commute into central London is easy and I tend to walk with my pup and get my steps in\u2014I walk a good hour, and I try to use it to think or listen to podcasts, but it\u2019s also a good time to fit in important calls.<\/p>\n

How have you managed the juggle between work and family\u2014and what has it cost you, financially and personally?<\/strong><\/p>\n

With strong support and a great husband, it becomes manageable. Though I won\u2019t pretend it\u2019s effortless. Childcare is a real investment and rarely guilt-free, but once your kids can tell you what\u2019s important to them, it gets easier. I have also accepted that you don\u2019t win on all fronts all the time.<\/p>\n

What does your morning routine actually look like\u2014be honest?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wake up at 5.45 a.m., get outside and work out first in morning light to help my circadian rhythm and manage stress. Then I look over my diary, plan, do my skincare, and make tea to take on the go. Take lots of supplements. I start work by 8 a.m., but I\u2019ve usually checked my emails an hour earlier.<\/p>\n

How much do you spend each day on your caffeine hit?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t drink coffee. Hot lemon and ginger tea is my order.<\/p>\n

What about eating on the go?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love all the salad places: Salad Project or Atis if out, or Soho Mews House is local.<\/p>\n

Where do you buy groceries?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love my local Chelsea stores for great delis, fishmongers and lovely European fruit and veg stores. For the basic family stuff I use Ocado.<\/p>\n

How often in a week do you dine out versus cook at home?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mostly cook at home during the week. Weekend dinners out when we can, but we love to entertain. We have a very full house\u2014I love a full table.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the 5-to-9, after your 9-to-5 look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Centred around family\u2014right now that means a fair bit of GCSE revision with my daughter, then winding down with the kids. I <\/em>often walk my pup after dinner, especially when it\u2019s so hot; it\u2019s nice to walk and helps my sleep. I fit in an evening sauna at a health club nearby 2 to 3 times a week, which really helps sleep. Then I go to bed at 10 \u2013 11 .p.m.<\/p>\n

How do you unwind from the top job?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walking, travelling and discovering new cities. It\u2019s where I get inspiration and reset.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your take on work-life balance at the top?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t love the phrase. Balance implies a steady state that doesn\u2019t exist. Protect a few non-negotiables and let everything else flex.<\/p>\n

The Rewards<\/h2>\n

What\u2019s the one subscription you can\u2019t live without?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spotify. I love music and podcasts. It\u2019s \u00a311 a month and probably the best value thing I pay for.\u00a0 Audible has massively helped my reading time too.<\/p>\n

Are you the proud owner of any tech gadgets?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My kids bought me an Oura Ring for my 50th, and it\u2019s the greatest gift. I\u2019m obsessed with tracking my fitness, sleep, and cycle data. It\u2019s addictive.<\/p>\n

How do you celebrate a big win? Do you still treat yourself when you hit a career milestone?<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the people who made it happen. We love a good celebration in the office.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the most expensive bonus treat you\u2019ve bought yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My puppy.<\/p>\n

How many days annual leave do you take a year? And do you ever truly switch off?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have no idea; I\u2019m a founder. I travel constantly, for work and for pleasure, and the lines blur. When I need a break, I take one.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the most extravagant trip you\u2019ve ever taken\u2014and was it worth every penny?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am going on a safari this Christmas, and I cannot wait!<\/p>\n

Take us on holiday with you, where did you go this year?<\/strong><\/p>\n

France this year: St Paul de Vence in the hills, then St Tropez for the beach. But always somewhere that lets you properly switch off. I try to get away a few times a year with the family.<\/p>\n

After everything you\u2019ve built, what\u2019s the ultimate reward?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Freedom, the ability to choose what I work on and with whom. Getting to 50, having built something real, means you can be selective. You stop doing things out of fear and start doing them because you genuinely want to. I\u2019m not entirely there yet, but I can see it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
