President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0said late Saturday that he would halt new planned attacks on Iran pending renewed talks to\u00a0wind down the war\u00a0and revive stalled cargo traffic through the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

It was the latest in a pattern of announcements the U.S. president has made to first threaten massive strikes and then later call them off. The abrupt shifts have been a defining feature of the five-month conflict that has\u00a0sent prices of oil and basic goods soaring\u00a0\u2014 and the announcements to date have been upended by renewed attacks days or even hours afterward.<\/p>\n
Here is a look at some of Trump\u2019s past major announcements about pausing strikes against Iran:<\/p>\n
April 7<\/h4>\n
The United States and Iran\u00a0agree to a two-week ceasefire\u00a0to end the intense fighting that began on Feb. 28\u00a0with Israeli and U.S. attacks. Trump makes the announcement less than two hours before a\u00a0deadline he had set\u00a0for Tehran to capitulate or face\u00a0attacks\u00a0on bridges and power plants \u2014 strikes he said would mean \u201ca whole civilization will die.\u201d<\/p>\n
April 21<\/h4>\n
Trump announces that the U.S. is\u00a0indefinitely extending its ceasefire\u00a0with Iran a day before it was to expire. He adds that he has been asked by mediators to hold off on attacks to give Iranian leaders time to come up with additional proposals. The fragile ceasefire lasts\u00a0until May 8, when the U.S. carried out strikes on Iranian tankers.<\/p>\n
May 18<\/h4>\n
After a weekend of dire threats against Iran,\u00a0Trump says he is holding offon a major planned military strike because \u201cserious negotiations\u201d were underway. \u201cThere seems to be a very good chance that they can work something out. If we can do that without bombing the hell out of them, I\u2019d be very happy,\u201d he said. By May 27,\u00a0U.S. strikes were back on\u00a0after negotiations faltered.<\/p>\n
June 11<\/h4>\n
After two days of back-and-forth attacks, Trump\u00a0threatens further escalation, saying the U.S. would hit Iran \u201cVERY HARD TONIGHT\u201d and take \u201ctotal control\u201d of its\u00a0oil and gas industries. Then, a few hours later, Trump posts on social media that there had been a breakthrough in negotiations and called off the strikes.<\/p>\n
June 17<\/h4>\n
Trump signs an\u00a0initial agreement with Iran\u00a0that calls for a permanent end to hostilities and for reopening of the strait, and starts a 60-day negotiating clock to reach a final deal on the future of Iran\u2019s nuclear program. Trump left the door open to abandoning it. \u201cIt\u2019s a memorandum of understanding, and if I don\u2019t like it, we\u2019ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

After Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the strait, Trump\u00a0launches new strikes\u00a0on Iran while he is in Ankara, Turkey, attending the NATO leaders\u2019 summit. Later, he renews his threat to \u201cjust finish the job\u201d on Iran after saying he believes the ceasefire is over.<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0says he has paused\u00a0two weeks of intense, daily U.S. strikes on Iran to give negotiations another chance.\u00a0During 13 days of strikes,\u00a0the U.S. military had targeted key military and commercial sites as clashes continued to escalate over shipping routes. In response, Iran had launched missiles and drones across the Middle East at countries that host U.S. troops.<\/p>\n
Aug. 1<\/h4>\n
After telling reporters the U.S. would hit Iran \u201cvery hard,\u201d Trump\u00a0says on social media\u00a0that he has canceled planned strikes, claiming Mideast allies had reached the parameters of a deal to end the war, including a reopening of the strait. \u201cBased on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,\u201d Trump said.
