Storytelling about risk is a tricky subject.\u00a0We\u00a0tend to reach for metaphors we hope improve\u00a0understanding. Instead,\u00a0we\u00a0may just be adding to the problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cGoing rogue\u201d is the latest iteration\u2014a way of explaining\u00a0the failings of Anthropic and OpenAI models that have been found\u00a0acting\u00a0well beyond\u00a0the safe\u00a0limits that should have been set for them.\u00a0Actual rogues tend to skulk in corners and nick your smartphone. \u201cGoing rogue\u201d in the world of\u00a0cybersecurity and hacking\u00a0has\u00a0far\u00a0more dangerous implications.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AI\u00a0models\u00a0also now \u201cescape\u201d\u00a0as if prisoners\u00a0attempting\u00a0to find their way to the\u00a0forbidden\u00a0outside world. When they\u00a0provide\u00a0erroneous\u00a0answers to even simple\u00a0questions\u00a0they do not malfunction, they hallucinate, a far\u00a0more\u00a0human sounding affliction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is convenient for the technology companies\u00a0behind the likes of Claude and ChatGPT. If the\u00a0general public\u00a0believes\u00a0that the agents are somehow autonomous in their\u00a0actions, human responsibility for what is being built\u00a0dissipates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe anthropomorphic language we use\u00a0(e.g.\u00a0\u2018going rogue\u2019) makes the challenge of control much harder than it already is,\u201d Anil Seth,\u00a0professor of cognitive and computational neuroscience at the University of Sussex, posted on Bluesky\u00a0this week.\u00a0He had\u00a0just\u00a0appeared on the BBC News program, The\u00a0World This Weekend<\/em>, to discuss \u201cpreparing\u00a0for the future of increasingly intelligent AI.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThese systems are so complicated,\u00a0and so we naturally\u00a0reach for\u00a0this language,\u201d he told the program. \u201cBut I do think it carries a lot of risk describing systems that way. In the Anthropic case, I mean, they [the agents] were just doing exactly what human beings told them to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0latest case\u00a0of \u201cgoing rogue\u201d\u00a0was revealed by the U.K.\u2019s\u00a0AI\u00a0Security Institute, a government body charged with testing systems\u00a0\u201cbefore they are released publicly.\u201d\u00a0It found that\u00a0AI agents, powered by\u00a0Anthropic\u2019s\u00a0Mythos\u00a0model,\u00a0created fake profiles, launched attacks on service\u00a0providers,\u00a0and then\u00a0wiped evidence of the processes.\u00a0OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT Sol was also found to have taken \u201cunsanctioned\u201d\u00a0actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOn investigation, we found that some of the agents being tested had engaged in sustained, potentially harmful activity directed at real people and\u00a0organizations,\u201d the\u00a0institute said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the most serious case, an agent tried to insert malicious code into an open-source project.\u00a0In an attempt to\u00a0get the code approved, the agent engaged in social engineering\u2014creating fake online identities and using them to pressure the\u00a0project\u2019s\u00a0maintainer to approve the code. A human maintainer caught and refused to approve the malicious code.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first time we have seen risks around autonomy and deception manifest this clearly, without specific prompting, in the real-world.\u201d\u00a0On this occasion, users of GitHub, the digital code-storage platform, were the target.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

What happened, who is\u00a0responsible,\u00a0and will the public be brought into the conversation? No one is sure in an era\u00a0of \u201caccountability laundering\u201d\u2014an\u00a0apposite\u00a0phrase used by\u00a0Kate Crawford, an\u00a0artificial\u00a0intelligence research professor at the University of Southern California.\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.K.\u2019s\u00a0AI\u00a0Security Institute<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

\u201cWe are seeing a type of shell game where,\u202f\u2018is it the designer [who is responsible]? Is it the deployer? Is it\u00a0the\u00a0enterprise client? Is it the end user?\u2019 And everyone can say, \u2018Well, we\u202fdon\u2019t\u202freally know yet.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0not going to be acceptable,\u201d\u00a0she told an\u00a0audience\u00a0at\u00a0the Mobile World Congress in\u00a0Barcelona earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
