Nasdaq futures gained 0.5%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. stocks hit an\u00a0all-time high\u00a0last week despite some recent downbeat data about\u00a0jobs\u00a0and, most notably last week, retail spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans unexpectedly\u00a0pulled back on retail spending\u00a0in July by the biggest amount in more than a year, according to the Commerce Department data released Friday<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walmart and Target both post second quarter earnings this week, with\u00a0Target surging\u00a0under new\u00a0CEO Michael Fiddelke, a 20-year company veteran who took over in February. Home improvement companies Home Depot and Lowe\u2019s also report quarterly earnings this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire sector is wrestling with stubbornly high inflation and customers that are laser focused on prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weak jobs and retail data has diminished the odds of any\u00a0interest rate\u00a0hike from the\u00a0Federal Reserve. That\u2019s good for markets because it lowers the cost of credit, but it may also suggest slowing growth at a time when\u00a0inflation\u00a0is elevated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fed has no good tool to fix a stagnating economy and high inflation at the same time, making so-called \u201cstagflation\u201d a worst-case scenario.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fed is set to report minutes from its July meeting on Wednesday, which will provide more details about its thinking on interest rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oil prices rose Monday with\u00a0Iran\u00a0saying it is working with Oman on a plan to manage the transit of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Global oil supplies have been squeezed because about 20% of the world\u2019s crude is transited through the strait on a typical day. Iran effectively shut down the strait after it was attacked by the U.S. and Israel in late February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent crude, the international standard, rose 1.1% to $89.50 per barrel, while U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In European trading, Germany\u2019s DAX dipped 0.9% at 26,416.57, while the CAC 40 in Paris lost 0.2% to 8,622.43.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 gained 0.1% to 10,751.53.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tokyo\u2019s Nikkei 225 index gained 0.7% to 69,220.25 after the Japanese government reported the\u00a0economy grew\u00a0slightly faster than forecast in the April-June quarter. In quarterly terms, the economy grew 0.3% in the second quarter of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. dollar fell to 159.17 Japanese yen from 159.32 yen.
