{"id":3117,"date":"2026-08-25T20:43:40","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T20:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=3117"},"modified":"2026-08-25T20:43:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T20:43:40","slug":"pope-leo-xiv-on-ais-new-form-of-domination-it-risks-becoming-a-tool-of-economic-colonialism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=3117","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo XIV on AI&#8217;s new &#8216;form of domination&#8217;: it risks becoming a tool of &#8216;economic colonialism&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2214560813-e1787685135478.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV warned that artificial intelligence risks becoming a new form of \u201ceconomic colonialism,\u201d deepening the gap between wealthy and poor nations, and said algorithms are already creating \u201ca subtle form of domination\u201d over who gets seen and heard.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must remain vigilant in this regard,\u201d Leo told the network of officeholders who make up the International Catholic Legislators Network (ICLN) on Friday. \u201cLest innovation become another vehicle for ideological or economic colonialism.\u201d He warned that AI\u2019s rapid development risks leaving poorer countries increasingly dependent on wealthier ones for the technology.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He went further, describing what he called \u201ca subtle form of domination when algorithms decide who is seen, and who remains invisible, when digital platforms shape public discourse without accountability, and when the dignity of workers is subordinated to the optimization of systems.\u201d Such developments, he said, \u201creveal a new face of the ancient temptation to domination and mastery without service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To guard against that, Leo called for \u201crobust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and a political system that does not abdicate its responsibility,\u201d so that \u201cno single ideology or interest dictates the values embedded in artificial intelligence systems.\u201d The pope\u2019s words to call for a responsible political system echoes language he has used before in tension with the Trump administration\u2019s deregulatory approach to AI. President Donald Trump has pushed to loosen federal AI rules and repealed the Biden administration\u2019s AI executive order in January 2025. When Leo released \u201cMagnifica Humanitas\u201d in May, dubbed the pope\u2019s \u201cAI encyclical,\u201d the Trump administration was split in response when Vice President JD Vance praised it and others dismissed the warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since that time, the pope said AI and technology at large decreases the interactions and relationships people have with one another. This in turn is causing marriage and birth rates to decrease as the ages people reach these milestones increase, if at all. AI, the pope warned, \u201cmust never be allowed to erode\u201d the family, and it does so by \u201creducing persons and relationships to data and simulations,\u201d by \u201cflooding young minds with content that distorts desire,\u201d and through \u201ceconomic models that make family life economically precarious.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A redelivery of the church\u2019s stance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The address built on his first encyclical, which made AI\u2019s effect on human dignity, labor and family life the centerpiece of his papacy\u2019s early teaching. Christopher Hale, a political consultant and founder of the newsletter Letters from Leo, said Friday\u2019s remarks were less a new position than a redelivery of ideas already laid out in the encyclical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one reads a 200-page encyclical,\u201d Hale told <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cOftentimes what will happen is over weeks and months the pope will reveal different parts of that encyclical.\u201d The pope\u2019s Friday\u2019s remarks were in gist a reiteration of his first encyclical\u2014but the point is who it is redelivering the point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale said Leo\u2019s religious authority gives him standing that other AI critics lack in confronting the technology industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSilicon Valley has an opponent that operates on a terrain that they\u2019re not used to,\u201d Hale said. \u201cThey\u2019re used to dealing in transactional relationships, but Leo XIV represents something of a quagmire for them because he cannot be bought off, he cannot be terrorized, he can\u2019t be indicted, he can\u2019t be deported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale added that pairing AI criticism with religious language broadens its reach beyond activists already skeptical of the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen this language is combined with moral language, with religious language, what it does is it takes a leftist critique that might have marginal support in the United States and makes it mainstream,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale pointed to the backlash against AI data centers as evidence that opposition to the industry already cuts across party lines, even without a shared political language to unite it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you look at the criticism of AI data centers, particularly over the summer, they\u2019re really coming from all factions, from the left and the right,\u201d Hale said. \u201cWhat\u2019s been hard about it, though, is that there has yet to be a language that can combine the two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe strangely represents the fusion of the populist left and the populist right,\u201d Hale said. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes him so powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>#Pope #Leo #XIV #AIs #form #domination #risks #tool #economic #colonialism<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Leo XIV warned that artif&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3118,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[828,2599,5758,5757,2646,515,1338,5756,3270,5753,1951,5754,1444,5755],"class_list":["post-3117","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance-news","tag-ai-agents","tag-ais","tag-colonialism","tag-domination","tag-economic","tag-economics","tag-family","tag-form","tag-leo","tag-pope","tag-risks","tag-rome","tag-tool","tag-xiv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
