\u201cEurope has been worrying about slowing growth since the start of this century,\u201d Mario Draghi said in 2024. \u201cVarious strategies to raise rates have come and gone, but the trend has remained unchanged.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

There is a tendency for gloom to descend when thinking about Europe\u2019s economic and business prospects. In comparison with America, the Gulf and Asia, the mature markets of the EU\u00a0and the rest of\u00a0the\u00a0continent\u00a0have languished. Since the\u00a0financial crisis, GDP growth in the euro-area has averaged 0.9% a year. In the U.S., it is above 2%.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Being European, overdoing the downsides comes naturally.\u00a0We are a broadly skeptical and conservative bunch,\u00a0not overly impressed\u00a0by\u00a0flamboyant displays of confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Admittedly the continent has labored as the AI hyper-scalers of America and China have produced products (and valuations) that make the eyes pop. Progress towards a European capital markets\u00a0union is lumpy. The effects of the U.K. leaving the EU are still being felt. The EU\u2019s Digital Markets Act has been criticized for being both anti-consumer and anti-growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are, though, plenty of bright spots.\u00a0On September 16,\u00a0we\u00a0will reveal\u00a0our\u00a0annual Fortune 500\u00a0Europe, the list of the 500 largest companies across the continent by revenue (here\u2019s a link to last year\u2019s list).\u00a0These are the powerhouses of the European economy, led last year by Volkswagen,\u00a0Shell\u00a0and Glencore.\u00a0The 2026 index\u00a0will be a\u00a0treasure trove\u00a0of\u00a0statistics on\u00a0profits,\u00a0revenues\u00a0and growth\u2014with many lessons from the successes of\u00a0those listed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the same day, C-suite leaders from across Europe and the Middle East will be gathering in London\u00a0for Fortune CEO Forum\u00a0to talk about\u00a0growth\u00a0and share\u00a0successes and\u00a0best practices. Leaders from Anthropic and OpenAI will be in the room with the CEOs of Ferrari and Volvo Cars U.K. The U.K.\u00a0chairman\u00a0of energy giant EDF will sit alongside board members from NatWest\u00a0and\u00a0the in-country\u00a0CEO of\u00a0Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale.\u00a0Defense sector policymakers will discuss infrastructure investment with the likes of Honeywell and Tech Mahindra.\u00a0Entrepreneurs\u00a0from banking, AI delivery\u00a0and\u00a0telecoms will talk about future opportunities.\u00a0From Microsoft to Shell,\u00a0C-suite\u00a0executives\u00a0representing\u00a0nearly $2trn of wealth will be\u00a0in the room.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On September 16 C-suite leaders from across Europe and the Middle East will be gathering in London\u00a0for Fortune CEO Forum\u00a0to talk about\u00a0growth\u00a0and share\u00a0successes and\u00a0best practices.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

Alongside\u00a0the data from the Fortune 500 index,\u00a0there\u00a0are other reasons for optimism.\u00a0Europe\u2019s Innovation Scorecard, a test of research and investment trends compiled by the European Commission, revealed that\u00a0innovation\u00a0performance has increased by 11.6 percentage points since 2019. The U.K., Europe\u2019s second-largest economy, sits happily above the EU average by more than 30 percentage points. \u201cEurope continues to perform well,\u201d the most recent scorecard said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The continent boasts some of the greatest universities in the world, is an AI-intellectual powerhouse, has booming financial centers of which many are rightly envious, best-in-class manufacturing from cars to windmills and leads the way on energy sustainability research and non-fossil fuel production. Global leaders flock to Europe for its unique position, geographically and politically, between China, the rest of Asia, the Gulf, and America. Education and healthcare systems are in the top tier. The U.K. wants to see closer co-operation with the rest of the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a research note at the end of July, Goldman Sachs said that Europe\u2019s economic growth had been \u201cmore resilient than expected\u2019 given the energy price shock which followed the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see several reasons for this resilience,\u201d the note said, \u201cThe economy\u2019s energy dependence has declined. Fiscal policy supports growth [with] rising defense spending across Europe. Real household income growth\u00a0remains\u00a0robust, and labor markets have\u00a0remained\u00a0resilient despite sub-potential growth, with the unemployment rate at an all-time low.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a continent keen on saving, consumer confidence\u00a0remains\u00a0positive despite stubbornly high inflation. Most families are comfortably\u00a0liquid\u00a0and spending is continuing to rise. Incomes are up without the\u00a0deleterious\u00a0effects on wealth equality seen in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe estimate that broad financial conditions\u2014including bank lending conditions and the European Central Bank\u2019s policy stance\u2014point to a positive impulse to growth,\u201d the bank said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Business leaders want to turn that impulse into a trend and know that collaboration across the continent and globally is key. Policy makers will also need to play their part.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must take a new stance towards cooperation,\u201d Draghi said. \u201cIn removing obstacles, harmonizing rules and coordinating policies, our confidence that we will succeed in moving forward should be strong.\u201d The plan is clear. Now it is time for the execution phase.\u00a0<\/p>\n
