Surrounding yourself with a bunch of yes-men is not a recipe for success\u2014at least according to AT&T CEO John Stankey. Instead, he wants employees to come to meetings prepared to share their ideas and perspectives\u2014not simply sit back and listen.<\/p>\n
\n
\u201cI love discourse,\u201d Stankey said in a recent joint interview with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon hosted by LinkedIn. The telecommunications executive added that one of the principles in his company\u2019s cultural documents is to not show up to meetings without having done your homework.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t walk in there and just be an observer,\u201d Stankey said. \u201cWhen you have a point of view, it shouldn\u2019t just be some uninformed opinion. It should be a point of view that\u2019s built on facts, information, and data. I crave that.\u201d<\/p>\n
If employees aren\u2019t willing to speak up\u2014or don\u2019t have a constructive point to make\u2014Stankey suggested there may not be the right people in the room.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dimon has similarly emphasized the importance of making sure meetings are both necessary and productive. Leaders should create an environment where employees aren\u2019t afraid to disagree or raise uncomfortable issues in meetings\u2014even if that means putting the proverbial \u201cdead cat on the table,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am never upset when someone says I\u2019m wrong about something,\u201d Dimon added. \u201cI just want to do the best I can for our clients, our country, our company.\u201d<\/p>\n
That leadership strategy has had varying results for the two companies. JPMorgan\u2019s stock is up more than 17% over the past year, while AT&T\u2019s has fallen about 12%.<\/p>\n
Stankey and Dimon are rethinking meeting prep\u2014but Dimon has always had etiquette on his mind<\/h2>\n
The two Fortune 500 CEOs also discussed how they\u2019re preparing for meetings in the age of AI. Both have long highlighted the importance of pre-reading materials, but Stankey and Dimon suggested that approach may be changing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m starting to wonder if reading is the best way to go,\u201d Stankey said. \u201cAs I\u2019ve gotten more into the dialog dynamic with AI, I can consume, I think, faster now in a directed conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI do that same thing,\u201d Dimon added. \u201cI use Gemini or Google, and deep dive to get information very quickly. I try to do all my previews before I go to meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, the underlying principle hasn\u2019t changed: Dimon has long argued that showing up prepared is essential.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I go to a meeting, I\u2019ve done the pre-reads, and you get 100% of my attention,\u201d he said at Fortune\u2019s<\/em> Most Powerful Women conference last year. Otherwise, Dimon believes in eliminating meetings altogether when they aren\u2019t a productive use of employees\u2019 time.<\/p>\nDimon has thought about proper meeting etiquette his entire career. In an early Fortune<\/em> profile of Dimon as a then-28-year-old Harvard MBA working as an assistant to American Express president Sanford \u201cSandy\u201d Weill, Dimon believed his best role was often to stay out of the way and soak everything in.<\/p>\n\u201cMy first goal was to learn something and not say anything until I could add some value,\u201d Dimon said at the time.<\/p>\n
But that mantra might not fly in Stankey\u2019s conference room. A young Dimon might find himself getting cold-called\u2014and expected to have a point of view.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
