He tells Gen Z: Don\u2019t ask for a raise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2219047103-1-e1788456538227.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Picture this: you\u2019ve just been offered a job after endless rounds of interviews and tests, when the interviewer asks, \u201cWhat are your salary requirements?\u201d According to one billionaire, the number you should be asking for isn\u2019t a salary at all.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dylan Taylor, the founder of space-tech company Voyager Technologies, became a millionaire at 27\u2014five years before Warren Buffett hit the same milestone. His advice for Gen Z hoping to grow their wealth in the current economy? Stop negotiating for a bigger paycheck, and start negotiating for equity instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s very difficult to make a lot of money working for somebody,\u201d Taylor tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s two different ways to make money: income and equity. Whether you\u2019re an employee or a founder, I think you should push for more equity and less income. That\u2019s really what compounds over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s advice Taylor took himself, long before he made his fortune in space. \u201cI always wanted equity as opposed to higher base salary,\u201d he says of the employment deals he negotiated early in his career. \u201cI think that ended up being very wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did indeed. Taylor made his millions running public companies across electronics, finance and banking, while also investing in real estate and various companies including Robinhood, Relativity Space, and Calm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, thanks to the return on investments he made from his twenties and Voyager\u2019s IPO, he\u2019s a billionaire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fortune<\/em>\u00a0<em>reviewed a summary of his financial records, which verifies his billionaire status.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How entry-level workers can ask for equity instead of a raise<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taylor\u2019s advice isn\u2019t just for founders or executives with leverage to spare\u2014he says even a 24-year-old, a few years into their career, can ask for equity over income. Not only that, but he says most employers would be impressed because it shows how seriously you\u2019re invested in their firm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf someone came to you and said, \u2018I actually want to make less money, but I want more of the value we create together\u2019\u2014I think most bosses, assuming they\u2019re not totally insecure and see this person as a threat, would welcome that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most managers, he adds, are open to that conversation even if they don\u2019t personally have the authority to approve it. \u201cThey might have to run it up to the next level, but from a company standpoint, it makes a lot of sense, too. With equity, you only really pay on success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every industry will bite, Taylor admits. \u201cIf you\u2019re working for an industrial valve company in Newcastle, I\u2019m not sure you\u2019d be able to do that. But if it\u2019s a tech company, they\u2019re issuing options\u2014so there\u2019s no reason why you can\u2019t ask the question.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And even if the answer is no, he says, that\u2019s still useful information for both you and your future boss.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou could just say, \u2018Okay, well, at what point would I be eligible?\u2019 I think it really reframes you in their mind. It\u2019s like, this is someone who\u2019s focused on creating value. I think it\u2019s good signaling.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His other piece of advice for young people trying to build wealth is almost as bold as asking bosses for equity: a barbell investing strategy. That is, putting the bulk of your money somewhere safe, and a smaller slice somewhere genuinely risky with potentially higher returns. \u201cAs crazy as it sounds, you\u2019d have 70% of your money in the FTSE 100, and 30% in Bitcoin,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt seems crazy, but I think those strategies work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">He\u2019s not alone: Martin Mignot and Ramit Sethi became millionaires before turning 30 thanks to early investments<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taylor isn\u2019t the only self-made millionaire telling Gen Z to chase equity over income<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin Mignot, the first investor in Deliveroo, similarly became a millionaire before turning 30.
