LIV Golf has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States, with more than \u00a330 million owed to players.<\/p>\n
LIV said the aim of the Chapter 11 petition was to \u201cpreserve the company\u2019s business\u201d as it looks to restructure after Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrew its backing earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Bosses of the controversial breakaway league, which was founded in 2021, remain confident about its future despite the latest development, chief executive Scott O\u2019Neil insisting he is looking forward to the \u201cnext chapter\u201d with new investors BC Partners.<\/p>\n
Among the stars named in the petition\u2019s documents who are owed money are Major winners Jon Rahm ($7.5m \u2013 \u00a35.5m) \u2013 he was reported to have signed a \u00a3250m deal when joining the rebel tour in 2023 as Masters champion \u2013 Bryson DeChambeau ($5.7m \u2013 \u00a34.2m) and Dustin Johnson ($5.5m \u2013 \u00a34.1m).<\/p>\n
Brooks Koepka, who left to rejoin the PGA Tour at the start of the year has an unsecured claim of $1.7m (\u00a31.25m), but it remains to be seen who will follow suit now that they have a route out of LIV.<\/p>\n
