{"id":4146,"date":"2026-09-09T04:00:48","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T04:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=4146"},"modified":"2026-09-09T04:00:48","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T04:00:48","slug":"macau-wants-to-be-a-business-city-not-just-the-worlds-gaming-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=4146","title":{"rendered":"Macau wants to be a \u2018business city,\u2019 not just the world&#8217;s gaming hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/55515605559_bfb3142383_o-e1788918097899.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Macau, the world\u2019s largest gambling hub, hopes to move from being a \u201ctourism city\u201d to a \u201cbusiness city,\u201d according to the head of the Chinese city\u2019s trade and investment promotion arm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at the Fortune Leaders Forum in Macau on Sept. 8, Alex Che Weng Keong, president of the board of directors of the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao SAR, cited an interesting role model: Las Vegas. The world\u2019s other major gambling hub has shown a casino town can also become a \u201cworld-class venue\u2026for business, exchange, conferences, and exhibitions,\u201d Che said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gaming still accounts for roughly 45% of Macau\u2019s GDP, and the industry supplies about 80% of the government\u2019s tax revenue. The city\u2019s new five-year plan\u2014the third since Portugal returned Macau to Chinese rule in 1999, covering 2026 to 2030\u2014commits some 130 billion patacas ($16.1 billion) to what Che called \u201cemerging industries. The plan also hopes to have non-gaming industries contribute 60% of GDP by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macau, one of China\u2019s two special administrative regions alongside Hong Kong, keeps its own currency, legal system, and customs territory. For Che, Macau can now use that autonomy to attract \u201cemerging industries\u201d that need regulatory flexibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEmerging industries often need different kinds of regulatory approaches and different ways for talent to move,\u201d he said. Macau \u201ccan leverage our position as an independent economy with an independent legislative system and independent regulatory system, and then invest a very large amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Central to that plan is the  Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, a 106-square-kilometer island next to the Macau border. Che called Hengqin \u201ca very important factor for the Greater Bay Area\u2019s future development\u201d and \u201ca major national strategy for empowering Macau.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macau\u2019s other selling point is its heritage. A former Portuguese colony, it retains Portuguese as an official language and a civil-law legal system, which Che said \u201cgives us a real convenience when it comes to trade and building partnerships with European countries or Portuguese-speaking countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen Macao\u2019s Chief Executive went to Portugal, who did he meet? The President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of Parliament, the head of the Supreme Court,\u201d he added. \u201cOnce government channels are established, business follow-through\u2014whether investment or cooperation\u2014becomes much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macau is the smallest of the 11 cities in the Greater Bay Area, a cluster that includes Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, counts 87 million residents, and generates roughly $2 trillion in output\u2014larger than Spain or Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the region remains less than the sum of its parts, argued Edward Au, southern region managing partner for Deloitte China, who joined Che on the panel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe already have a lot of world-class points of innovation, but we don\u2019t yet feel that they\u2019re connected into a world-class innovation network,\u201d Au said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fix, he suggested, is a \u201cclearer division of labor\u201d: Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou leading on \u201copen, cutting-edge innovation,\u201d manufacturing hubs like Dongguan and Foshan playing a \u201cmid-stream engineering role,\u201d and Macau and Hengqin carving out \u201ctheir own niche in traditional Chinese medicine, big health, and the data-technology market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Che expressed a hope that people might have a more expansive view of Macau by 2036\u2013and not just in terms of breaking free of its reputation as a casino hub.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen people talk about Macao, [they] won\u2019t just mean the 33.4 square kilometers of the peninsula\u2014they\u2019ll also include Hengqin\u2019s 106 square kilometers, so that externally our image becomes that of a unified \u2018tech city,&#8217;\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the goal we\u2019re working toward over the next decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>#Macau #business #city #worlds #gaming #hub<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Macau, the world\u2019s largest gam&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4147,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[269,3475,2125,7064,5026,7063,2044],"class_list":["post-4146","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance-news","tag-business","tag-city","tag-fortune-leaders-forum","tag-gaming","tag-hub","tag-macau","tag-worlds"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
