{"id":4202,"date":"2026-09-09T19:19:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T19:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=4202"},"modified":"2026-09-09T19:19:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T19:19:25","slug":"six-in-10-americans-dont-trust-what-the-federal-government-tells-them-on-major-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=4202","title":{"rendered":"Six in 10 Americans don&#8217;t trust what the federal government tells them on major issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AP26232811371625-e1788975587622.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Americans are more skeptical of government information than they were a few years ago, with majorities now saying they have little or no trust in federal government information about elections and politics, foreign affairs or the environment, a new poll finds.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey from\u00a0The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research\u00a0and USA Facts shows that while mistrust of government information has\u00a0grown since 2024, it\u2019s also higher than it was at the end of President Donald Trump\u2019s first term, underscoring how his recent attempts to dismantle parts of the federal bureaucracy may have affected public confidence in the executive branch, particularly among Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those suspicions extend to the results of the coming midterm elections. Only 34% of U.S. adults trust government certifications of election results \u201ca great deal\u201d or \u201cquite a bit,\u201d which is down slightly from 40% in 2024. Certification is a typically routine process in which local and state officials confirm the vote count, but it\u2019s\u00a0become politicized\u00a0since\u00a0Trump lost\u00a0the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trust in government information has also become more partisan since Trump\u2019s first term, the survey found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty hard to trust anything that\u2019s being communicated,\u201d said Shannon Ingram, 46, a Democrat who lives in Maryland, pointing to shifting health recommendations as an example of \u201cquestionable\u201d government information she\u2019s seen since Trump regained office. \u201cThere is a significant amount of bias, and it comes from the people who are authoring the content.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lower trust in federal government information<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 6 in 10 U.S. adults have low trust in information from the federal government about the environment, foreign affairs, elections and politics, abortion or immigration \u2014 saying they trust it \u201conly a little\u201d or \u201cnot at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mistrust in what the federal government says has risen at least slightly on nearly every topic that was asked about in an\u00a0AP-NORC\/ USA Facts survey\u00a0from 2019. That includes education \u2014 which has risen from 37% in 2019 to 53% now \u2014 with a 9-percentage point spike in the last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings come after a year and a half of upheaval in the executive branch. Trump\u00a0began to dismantle\u00a0key parts of the federal bureaucracy soon after entering the White House for the second time, moving to end longstanding programs and\u00a0shutter entire agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, thousands of federal employees\u00a0have been fired\u00a0or left their jobs,\u00a0substantially reducing the ranks\u00a0of the government statisticians and leading experts to warn about risks to data quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shifting regulations and recommendations have also led to dramatic changes in government policy. Recent changes to longstanding health advice have put\u00a0doctors and medical organizations\u00a0at odds with the Trump administration on vaccination recommendations. Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency\u00a0rescinded a scientific finding\u00a0that has underpinned government action to fight climate change for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremy Cove, a 44-year-old Republican from Missouri, trusts the Trump administration\u2019s guidance on matters like vaccines, but he disagrees with their assertion that climate change is not happening, or that humans are not contributing to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love Trump; I voted for Trump, but some of the things he\u2019s doing just makes me distrust more,\u201d Cove said. \u201cStuff like renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, it just makes you think about what their priorities are. Then you realize it\u2019s not what it should be, which in turn, makes you distrust even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belief in government information has become more partisan<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gap between Republicans\u2019 and Democrats\u2019 trust in government information is much wider than it was during Trump\u2019s first term, a shift that first began to appear under former President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats were generally less likely to trust government information in Trump\u2019s first term, but not dramatically more than Republicans. That shifted when control of the White House changed hands. Republicans\u2019 mistrust in government information rose while Biden was president and fell after Trump took office. Meanwhile, Democrats\u2019 doubts declined under Biden and spiked when Trump regained power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, 61% of Democrats now have low trust in information about the federal budget, compared with 42% of Republicans, while 60% of Democrats have low trust in information about crime, compared with only 32% of Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Larry Haith, a 76-year-old Republican from Idaho, says he tends to trust the federal government \u2014 though, he acknowledges that it can vary based on the current administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGenerally speaking, I\u2019ve got more confidence in the federal government today than I\u2019ve had in years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independents, meanwhile, became more mistrustful of government information under Biden and haven\u2019t shifted under Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only issue without a substantial partisan divide in the new survey is vaccination recommendations and safety: about 6 in 10 Democrats, Republicans and independents trust the federal government on vaccination recommendations and safety \u201conly a little\u201d or \u201cnot at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Few trust political messages, even from their own party<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the 2026 midterms approach, public concern about the accuracy of the election results is widespread. Just under half of U.S. adults are \u201cextremely\u201d or \u201cvery\u201d concerned the federal government will publicly discredit or question election results, tamper with election results, or pressure state election officials to change how they certify or report results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past few months, Trump has\u00a0repeated long-debunked allegations\u00a0of mass voter fraud in the 2020 election,\u00a0attempted to place new restrictions\u00a0on mail voting in time for the midterms and pushed Congress to\u00a0enact a proof-of-citizenship requirement\u00a0to register and vote. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has also\u00a0warned state officials\u00a0that they could lose funding or face investigations if they fail to go along with Trump\u2019s election security demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, few Americans trust the information they get from political campaigns. Only about 1 in 10 U.S. adults say the Democratic Party or Republican Party campaign messages are \u201calways\u201d or \u201coften\u201d based in factual information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a sign of how deep the mistrust runs, only about one-quarter of Democrats trust their party\u2019s campaign messages to be factual at least \u201coften,\u201d while a similar share of Republicans say this about their party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than half of Democrats, 44%, trust government certifications of election results \u201ca great deal\u201d or \u201cquite a bit,\u201d a substantial decline from 65% in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with Trump back in the White House, though, Republicans haven\u2019t seen a similar increase in confidence. Only 29% of Republicans have high trust in government certifications of election results, up just slightly from 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trust in other sources of information about election outcomes \u2014 such as national news outlets or cable news networks \u2014 is also low overall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kim Murza, a Democrat from Colorado, has faith in the country\u2019s ability to run fair elections but blames the Trump administration for eroding Americans\u2019 trust in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy concern is more about what the current administration is doing,\u201d said 45-year-old Murza. \u201cI think they are doing whatever they can to try to put that distrust in people\u2019s minds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">___<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AP-NORC\/\u00a0USA Facts\u00a0poll of 1,036 adults was conducted July 29 to Aug. 10 using a sample drawn from NORC\u2019s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
