Rush until Oct. 8, giving time for federal prosecutors and his attorney to finalize the plea deal and avoid a public trial that the parties said could involve significant litigation over classified material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\u00a0joint court filing\u00a0Thursday by the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office of the Eastern District of Virginia and Rush\u2019s lawyer did not outline the details of the tentative plea deal. The U.S. attorney\u2019s office declined to comment Saturday, and Rush\u2019s attorney did not not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rush was charged with theft of public money in May. He was accused of fraudulently claiming 744 hours of military leave on his timecards after he was honorably discharged from the Navy in 2015 and of inflating his salary by falsely claiming degrees from Clemson University in South Carolina and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, according to\u00a0an FBI agent\u2019s affidavit\u00a0filed in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same document also revealed that investigators searched Rush\u2019s home and seized about 300 gold bars worth more than $40 million, plus about $2 million in U.S. currency and about 35 luxury watches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI affidavit said Rush had obtained the gold bars from the U.S. government for \u201cwork-related expenses.\u201d Rush\u2019s attorney has said the charge against him isn\u2019t related to the gold bars, which she described as \u201ca sensational tidbit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Justice Department attorney said during a June court proceeding that Rush wasn\u2019t supposed to have the gold bars at his home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col layout-gap-md\">\n<div class=\"not-prose empty:contents clear-both [:has(*[data-empty=true])]:hidden max-md:[:has(*[data-empty-mobile=true])]:hidden md:[:has(*[data-empty-desktop=true])]:hidden\">\n<div class=\"typography-level-4 mt-4 font-graphik-compact [&amp;_*_a]:hover:underline [&amp;_*_a]:text-accent\" data-cy=\"subscriptionPlea\"><span class=\"description-parser contents\" data-cy=\"description\"><strong>Exclusive:<\/strong> In a new sit-down interview with <em>Fortune<\/em>, OpenAI CEO <strong>Sam Altman<\/strong> explains safety standards are &#8220;not at a place&#8221;
