{"id":4452,"date":"2026-09-13T17:01:54","date_gmt":"2026-09-13T17:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=4452"},"modified":"2026-09-13T17:01:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-13T17:01:54","slug":"dario-amodei-and-jacob-coxon-agree-something-terrifying-could-happen-in-a-matter-of-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=4452","title":{"rendered":"Dario Amodei and Jacob Coxon agree: Something terrifying could happen in a matter of months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2280291294-e1789312427641.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The narrative around AI suddenly took an existential turn over the past week as leading voices sounded the alarm over humanity\u2019s future, and the fear of an imminent calamity has sharpened those warnings.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on the industry to slow down development, saying that AI has been advancing \u201cdrastically faster\u201d\u00a0since the summer, driven primarily by AI\u2019s ability to upgrade itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If left unchecked, this so-called recursive self-improvement could outrun the ability of humans to control AI, he explained in a blog post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amodei also pointed to the hack of Hugging Face by hundreds of autonomous AI agents, warning that a similar swarm armed with greater\u00a0capabilities\u00a0could have caused \u201ccatastrophic damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGiven the accelerating rate of AI capability development, it\u2019s my worry that in 6\u201312 months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent\u00a0botnet (potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage), and that the scale of damage would continue to increase from there if AI becomes more powerful without the necessary guardrails,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon made a similar prediction. In an interview with NBC\u2019s\u00a0<em>Meet the Press with Kristen Welker<\/em>, he was asked why he went public with his claim that both companies are acting irresponsibly in developing ever more capable AI systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Amodei, Coxon cited AI\u2019s rapidly accelerating pace of capabilities and the Hugging Face attack, which showed that AI can go rogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo these AIs are getting smarter, very, very quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd in particular, in the next six months to a year, I expect the capabilities of our AI systems to be quite scary.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coxon compared the development of artificial super-intelligence to the arrival of aliens on Earth, adding that AI researchers are building a \u201csuperhuman-level mind\u201d without understanding what it wants or the way it thinks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the future, AI could obtain \u201csuperhuman hacking capabilities, very superhuman abilities to create novel bio-weapons and also abilities to control, say, autonomous drones or all the robots that are currently being built, very rapidly,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coxon also said a kill switch probably would work on a lot of AI systems\u2014for now. But he pointed out there are a lot of switches. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s still doable to shut down AI, he nodded to Amodei\u2019s blog post and cautioned that it\u2019s possible a kill switch wouldn\u2019t work because a swarm might go on \u201can internet-wide hacking run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others at Anthropic have backed up Coxon, who set off the recent panic with a post on X that claimed the industry is \u201cgambling with our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic\u2019s head of alignment commented\u00a0on the post, saying Coxon was correct in his assertion that many Anthropic and OpenAI researchers believe that increasingly powerful AI could potentially wipe out humanity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evan Hubinger, Anthropic\u2019s \u201calignment science lead,\u201d wrote in response to Coxon\u2019s resignation post that \u201cwe really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!\u201d Hubinger said his own estimate of the risk of that happening within the next decade is more than 10%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with Amodei about the need for slowing down development and hinted at an emerging pact to do so among top AI labs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that will happen,\u201d he told\u00a0<em>Fortune<\/em>\u00a0Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell in an exclusive interview. \u201cI\u2019m not going to pre-announce private discussions that I think should be at some point shared as a group.
