OpenAI\u2019s still looking at an IPO\u2014but not in 2026.<\/p>\n

\n

On Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Fortune<\/em> editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell that it wasn\u2019t the right time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don\u2019t feel pressure on that,\u201d he said in an interview for Shontell\u2019s Titans and Disruptors of Industry<\/em> podcast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Altman was referencing the outpouring of concern, fear, and chatter that emerged last week, when researcher Jacob Coxon (who\u2019d also worked at OpenAI) resigned from Anthropic, with a very public message: AI\u2019s makers are moving quickly and irresponsibly. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei sounded off over the weekend, and Altman told Shontell that OpenAI\u2019s go-public ambitions are linked to safety. As she wrote on Saturday:<\/p>\n

He added that OpenAI will go public when the business is ready and when the company is ready as it relates to \u201cwhat the moment is like in society with this technology.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

When pressed on whether 2026 is off the table in favor of 2027, Altman replied, \u201cI would say not 2026. Yeah, we got a lot of stuff to do, like meeting this moment of what is going to be required for safety and alignment, and how the industry and governments can work together.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Altman even suggested that AI\u2019s biggest names, from Amodei to Hassabis, will likely get together to discuss safety at some point.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to pre-announce private discussions that I think should be at some point shared as a group,\u201d he told Shontell. \u201cBut, yeah, I think that will happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

All sorts of things are probably true here: The safety fears are absolutely a worthwhile conversation, and deeply valid. At the same time, I do wonder if it\u2019s easier to talk about apocalyptic fears of the future than concerns of the present. (I\u2019m far from the first to wonder about this dynamic.) There\u2019s also a lot of money on the table: Investors have poured more than $180 billion into OpenAI over the years, and a much-anticipated exit appears far on the horizon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Regardless, it\u2019s clear that the existential fears of the AI boom have hit a boiling point. And the conversation only matters so much, of course\u2014the action from here is what will make a difference. And what that action looks like remains unclear.\u00a0<\/p>\n

– <\/span>Shennon<\/b> Biotechnologies<\/b>, a San Francisco-based developer of cancer immunotherapies, raised $12 million in funding from <\/span>Future<\/b> Ventures<\/b>, <\/span>NextGen<\/b> Venture<\/b> Partners<\/b>, <\/span>Samos<\/b> Investments<\/b>, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span>Aron<\/b>, a San Francisco-based developer of AI software for procurement teams, raised $8 million in funding, including a $6 million seed round led by <\/span>Storm<\/b> Ventures<\/b> and $2 million in pre-seed funding led by <\/span>Menlo<\/b> Ventures<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

PRIVATE EQUITY<\/h3>\n

– <\/span>Electra<\/b> Therapeutics<\/b>, a South San Francisco-based developer of therapies for immune-mediated diseases and cancer, plans to raise up to $347.2 million in an offering of 21.7 million shares priced between $14 and $16 on the Nasdaq. <\/span>OrbiMed<\/b>, <\/span>Westlake<\/b> BioPartners<\/b>, <\/span>Redmile<\/b> Biopharma<\/b>, <\/span>Aventis<\/b>, <\/span>LSP 7 Co\u00f6peratief<\/b>, and <\/span>New<\/b> Leaf<\/b> Ventures<\/b> back the company.<\/span><\/p>\n
