The English engineer, Henry Mill,\u00a0submitted\u00a0the first-ever patent for a \u201cmachine transcribing\u00a0letters\u201d in 1714. It never actually went into production,\u00a0but\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0forerunner of the typewriter and then\u00a0the electronic keyboard: 312 years later, Christian Klein, CEO of software giant SAP,\u00a0is noting the end of an era. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe end of the keyboard is near,\u201d he tells\u00a0me. \u201cWhen you\u00a0encounter\u00a0voice recognition from many of these large language models,\u00a0[it] is super strong. Now we\u00a0have to\u00a0do some work to translate voice into business language\u00a0and\u00a0business data.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0deleterious\u00a0effects\u00a0of AI\u00a0on the humble\u00a0keyboard\u00a0might not be top of the list of\u00a0business leaders\u2019\u00a0priorities when it comes to mapping out the technological future.\u00a0But SAP\u2019s\u00a0prediction\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cdata-inputting\u201d\u00a0via typing will end in the next two to three years\u00a0at the firm\u00a0has significance well beyond\u00a0the death of\u00a0QWERTY.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now giving our coworker tool more and more skills,\u201d Klein says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe future will be, for sure, that you are not typing any data information into an SAP system. You can\u00a0instead\u00a0ask\u00a0certain analytical questions\u00a0with your voice. You can trigger operational task\u00a0workflows. You can\u00a0also\u00a0make\u00a0entries in the system with your voice\u2014performance feedback, pipeline entries, et cetera. The technological capabilities are there, it\u00a0really\u00a0is\u00a0now\u00a0about the execution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, about the execution\u201d is the phrase most associated with artificial intelligence\u00a0in 2026.\u00a0We are beyond the theoretical\u00a0discussions about what artificial intelligence might be able to do and\u00a0into the zone of applied AI.\u00a0Software companies are creating\u00a0billions\u00a0of dollars\u00a0in profitable revenue supplying the services\u00a0of\u00a0the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Christian Klein <\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

SAP stands for\u00a0\u201cSystemanalyse\u00a0Programmentwicklung\u201d\u00a0(which translates to \u201cSystem Analysis Program Development\u201d). The\u00a0firm, headquartered in Walldorf, Germany,\u00a0near\u00a0where it was founded in 1972, provides\u00a0cloud services\u00a0to the largest companies in the world,\u00a0as well as millions of small and medium-size enterprises.\u00a0Klein, 44, is the youngest CEO\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0major business\u00a0listed\u00a0on Germany\u2019s DAX index.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u00a0argues that there are two\u00a0broad\u00a0categories\u00a0of businesses when it comes to AI adoption. First,\u00a0the company that says,\u00a0\u201cAI is really changing the way I run my business.\u201d\u00a0Then\u00a0the other that says,\u00a0\u201cI invested a ton of money,\u00a0but I see rather low value in it.\u201d\u00a0The latter might be\u00a0viewing\u00a0AI as an efficiency hack\u00a0for\u00a0one\u00a0division\u00a0or function.\u00a0The issue here is\u00a0that there\u00a0is no reach\u00a0across to other parts of the\u00a0firm. Klein says that the \u201cwhole business\u201d needs to be\u00a0at\u00a0the table. \u201cAI is superpowerful,\u00a0but it needs to be applied in the right way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He gives an example of a large consumer goods company SAP is working with which is beginning to link\u00a0customer-demand planning with\u00a0company\u00a0financial planning\u00a0and then with\u00a0inventory control\u2014a laborious, often months long process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018Okay, this agent really is predicting the demand much\u00a0more intelligently\u00a0than all the human beings I had in planning,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018But it\u00a0still\u00a0always takes months until I adjust the inventory\u2014and the inventory is dependent on procurement and the manufacturing side.\u2019\u00a0So\u00a0we are now building,\u00a0with agents,\u00a0an end-to-end planning scenario which helps them\u00a0optimize\u00a0inventory by 20%. This is real money.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Applying AI horizontally throughout the business, rather than vertically in divisions,\u00a0is key.\u00a0Add\u00a0in\u00a0training of your employees,\u00a0and the transformational effects of AI can finally begin to be realized.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAn employee can say,\u00a0\u2018Hey, go into my PowerPoint\u00a0presentations,\u2019\u201d Klein notes.\u00a0\u201cThey can give an AI\u00a0model\u00a0a\u00a0million financial analysis PowerPoints. We\u00a0then\u00a0need to make sure, with our AI, that the business data is understood and that we can do the analysis right\u00a0away.\u00a0The employee\u00a0can\u00a0then\u00a0say,\u00a0\u2018Tell me, from the millions of documents we created in the financial department, what would be the right measures to tackle some of the challenges we see in the financial performance of the company?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the future of work. And then, hopefully,\u00a0they\u00a0get it beautifully packaged up,\u00a0with\u00a0some nice graphs and commentaries, some\u00a0nice analysis\u00a0and\u00a0recommended actions, and then\u00a0they\u00a0can go to\u00a0their\u00a0managers,\u00a0who\u00a0say,\u00a0\u2018Wow, this is a new way of steering this company. My God, what did you do? Which training did you attend?\u2019\u00a0And\u00a0they\u00a0say,\u00a0\u2018No, there is no training.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beyond\u00a0the training\u00a0in AI itself, of course.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The use\u00a0of voice\u00a0to create\u00a0workflows\u00a0within\u00a0traditional\u00a0environments\u00a0is one challenge. There are\u00a0also\u00a0higher-order issues that Fortune 500 leaders\u00a0must\u00a0consider. Klein and I were speaking at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, an event dominated by Donald Trump and\u00a0his\u00a0threat to annex Greenland and launch new tariff wars.\u00a0\u201cSpheres of influence\u201d\u00a0and mercantilism are back,\u00a0as the G4 (America, China, Europe,\u00a0and India) approach global trade in\u00a0very\u00a0different\u00a0ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are wanting companies who do global trade\u00a0across\u00a0borders,\u00a0and no one wants to scale back on the cause and vision they have as a company,\u201d Klein says of the increased geopolitical risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are two superpowers in the world,\u00a0and\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0using the power to have more influence.\u00a0I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0expect that this will change anytime soon,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0world has changed a lot, because suddenly not everyone is saying:\u00a0\u2018Oh, I believe in globalization.\u2019\u00a0Now, [it\u2019s]\u00a0\u2018my country first.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Which means\u00a0you\u00a0have to\u00a0position your business for the\u00a0new reality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[Companies] are\u00a0saying,\u00a0\u2018Hey, Christian,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0great your software helps [in] over 100 countries. But how do we do this in a world which\u00a0is\u00a0becoming\u00a0more fragmented?\u2019\u00a0There are\u00a0lots of\u00a0new sovereignty requirements. In this case, you need the cloud\u00a0server to\u00a0be located\u00a0in\u00a0the country. In another country, you need to protect the data in\u00a0a different way. In another country, you need to cut it from the global network. That\u00a0can be\u00a0pretty expensive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBusiness cannot just change the software.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0mission-critical,\u201d Klein says. \u201cNow,\u00a0with AI,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0even more mission-critical. What we\u00a0have to\u00a0make sure is, when it comes to geo-lock, we are [relying] on infrastructure. We want U.S. infrastructure with the\u00a0hyperscalers;\u00a0in China\u00a0we\u00a0want\u00a0Chinese infrastructure. And we want\u00a0infrastructure provided\u00a0by\u00a0local providers\u00a0here in Germany or\u00a0in\u00a0France\u00a0or\u00a0wherever. And we always need to make sure that,\u00a0when something is happening in the world,\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0geopolitical sanctions\u00a0or\u00a0export control\u2014as\u00a0we have seen in\u00a0Iran\u00a0or\u00a0in Russia\u2014we can port our platform over to another\u00a0type of\u00a0cloud infrastructure\u00a0in days or weeks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Talk\u00a0now\u00a0is of\u00a0\u201ckill-switches\u201d and geo-location\u00a0autonomy\u2014new\u00a0entries\u00a0on the list\u00a0of\u00a0leadership risks.\u00a0Klein is not convinced Europe\u00a0has got\u00a0the memo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talk about Europe\u00a0as\u00a0a superpower. I would say Europe is a superpower in regulation, but\u00a0not\u00a0in unity, because there is no banking union, there is no trade union, there is no digital union, and\u00a0in a world like this, you need economic power. With economic power, you can influence certain things. You are listened to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking about digital taxes and so on. I would strongly advise both business and political leaders in Europe to spend more time on:\u00a0How can we innovate?\u00a0How can we use the strengths we have\u00a0to build something,\u00a0to increase economic power?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Geography and the G4\u00a0are the new global reality\u00a0in the era of applied AI.\u00a0Businesses\u00a0must\u00a0be agile\u00a0in how they\u00a0respond,\u00a0as it is not always clear\u00a0where the next political boulder is coming from.\u00a0When Henry\u00a0Mill\u00a0patented the first typewriter there was no such entity as the United States of America.\u00a0Now it is writ large on the\u00a0decision tree of every\u00a0global leader.<\/p>\n
