If trying to land a job or switch roles in 2026 has felt like sending resumes into the void, the frustration isn\u2019t yours alone. Even Hisayuki Idekoba, CEO of Indeed, one of the world\u2019s largest job-search platforms, has admitted that the hiring process has become a \u201cvicious cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Job openings have slowed down while the number of applicants competing for each position has climbed, leaving many qualified workers applying to dozens\u2014or even hundreds\u2014of jobs without hearing back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Employers, meanwhile, are facing their own challenges. Applicant pools are flooded with AI-generated applications, while scams involving fake candidates\u2014including North Korean IT workers\u2014have made it harder for companies to identify legitimate applicants.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got 1,000 applications, and you think all 1,000 people are not qualified?\u201d Idekoba said to Business Insider<\/em>. \u201cSomething\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

AI is making the hiring process \u2018worse,\u2019 CEO says<\/h2>\n

Indeed\u2019s CEO is not alone in expressing frustration with today\u2019s job market and application process.<\/p>\n

Daniel Chait, CEO of hiring software firm Greenhouse, has similarly pointed to frustrations on both sides of the hiring process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first time when really both sides have been unhappy,\u201d Chait previously told Fortune<\/em>. \u201cThe market just isn\u2019t working for either side.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also confirmed that the perceived \u201cblack hole\u201d of job applications is real\u2014and the data backs him up. The number of applications per job is up 111% between 2022 and 2025, while the number of recruiters has fallen 56%, creating a perfect form for both job seekers and employers.<\/p>\n

Some recruiters, including Indeed, have turned to AI tools to help manage the growing workload and better match candidates with jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can we make sure job seekers are a real person, and it\u2019s not an AI application, and they\u2019re serious, and they\u2019re qualified,\u201d Indeed\u2019s Idekoba said. \u201cAnd how can we have real employers who are really trying to fill positions?\u201d<\/p>\n

Five years from now, he added that he hopes all of recruiters\u2019 manual tasks will be automated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI should take on more of that work so recruiters can get back to building connections with the right match,\u201d Idekoba said in a speech at Indeed\u2019s FutureWorks conference. <\/p>\n

But applicants are using AI, too, to tailor resumes, write cover letters and improve their chances of getting noticed\u2014creating another layer of complexity in an already strained process.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve called that the AI doom loop,\u201d Chait said. \u201cEveryone\u2019s using their own AI to solve their own problem, but it\u2019s making the whole system worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while there\u2019s no easy fix for the system, his advice for candidates is to look beyond the companies with the biggest names and most attention, where competition for openings can be especially fierce.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t just apply to, you know, OpenAI, because they\u2019re in the news every day,\u201d Chait said to Fortune<\/em>. \u201cThink of the job you want and apply to less-known companies who do that type of work\u2014you\u2019ll find a lot more success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Getting hired often takes more than just applying<\/h2>\n

While applying cold can feel like the easiest\u2014and most obvious\u2014strategy, the problem may not be your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 at all. It may be that the right people don\u2019t know you\u2019re looking.<\/p>\n

Business professor and entrepreneur Scott Galloway has argued that networking can be the difference between simply submitting an application and having someone inside a company vouch for you.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoogle puts out a job opening, they get 200 CVs within like eight minutes. They limit it down to the 20 most qualified. Seventy percent of the time, the person they pick is someone who has an internal advocate,\u201d he said on a Vice News<\/em> podcast last year.<\/p>\n

Galloway added that networking creates advocates who will recommend you for positions even when you\u2019re not actively job searching: \u201cYou want to be placed in rooms of opportunities when you\u2019re not physically there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanjay Beri, CEO of the $7 billion software giant Netskope, echoed that advice, saying that building those relationships can pay off long after the initial introduction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWho you know, how you get to know them and building your network will pay off over time,\u201d the Gen X founder and CEO previously told Fortune<\/em>. \u201cSometimes those jobs you want, they\u2019re never published.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
