But according to CEO Ali Ghodsi, one key to scaling the company hasn\u2019t been getting his top talent into more meetings\u2014it\u2019s making sure they aren\u2019t stuck in conference rooms all day.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI try to compress the calendar,\u201d Ghodsi said on a recent episode of the <em>Long Strange Trip<\/em> podcast.\u00a0 \u201cWhat I mean by that is I try to put nothing on the calendar. It ends up being packed anyway, but there are many blocks that are free where I can go back to this main thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 8 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Ghodsi said he and his team meet to identify that \u201cmain thing\u201d\u2014essentially, the biggest bottleneck facing the company and how they can work together to solve it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to unblock that big thing that I think is the thing that\u2019s going to get us 10x,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other than that, Ghodsi said he wants to avoid other meetings being put on his calendar. A day with back-to-back meetings isn\u2019t just exhausting\u2014it can mean losing control of his own schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think if I do the 8 a.m. back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-5 or 6 p.m., I consider those days I\u2019ve just been a slave to my calendar. I\u2019m just working for my calendar,\u201d he said. Instead of focusing on his own priorities, he\u2019s spending the day working through everyone else\u2019s demands: \u201cMonkeys on my back, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fortune<\/em> reached out to Databricks for further comment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CEOs are pushing back on unnecessary meetings and bad etiquette<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a business environment where companies are constantly being pushed to move faster, it can be tempting to solve every problem with another meeting\u2014and invite a handful of stakeholders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, meetings can quickly become distractions themselves, filling up with small talk, veering off topic, or getting bogged down in corporate jargon. In fact, a 2024 survey by software giant Atlassian found that nearly three out of four meetings are ineffective at disseminating information. And for 77% of respondents, meetings simply create more meetings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while Ghodsi leads a relatively young company, CEOs at more established businesses have echoed his concerns that calendars packed with meetings can get in the way of actually getting work done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan warned last year that leaders can easily mistake being busy for being effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you first start, it\u2019s easy to confuse busyness and going to meetings with leadership,\u201d Jordan said on a panel of CEOs at <em>The New York Times<\/em> DealBook Summit in December 2025. \u201c\u2026Because what we all find, I\u2019m sure, is there\u2019s no time to \u2018work,\u2019 and you confuse going to meetings with the work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has taken a more concrete approach to protecting that time: He caps his meetings at four hours a day\u2014and sets strict rules for when a meeting is convened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy meetings are also quick, and my meetings are almost all conversational,\u201d Kirby said in a recent interview with <em>Semafor<\/em>. \u201cI want to talk\u2014really, don\u2019t go through decks. If you want to send a deck, send it to me in advance, and then we\u2019re just going to talk about it. But you\u2019re not going to read slides to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fewer CEOs have been more blunt about their disdain for meetings than JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who put his philosophy plainly in his 2024 letter to shareholders: \u201cKill meetings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that doesn\u2019t mean every meeting is useless. Instead, he expects them to be treated with the same focus brought to any other important work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I go to a meeting, I\u2019ve done the pre-reads, and you get 100% of my attention,\u201d Dimon said at <em>Fortune\u2019s<\/em> 2025 Most Powerful Women summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNone of this nodding off, none of this reading my mail,\u201d Dimon added. \u201cIf you have an iPad in front of me and it looks like you\u2019re reading your email or getting notifications, I tell you to close the damn thing.
