ABC\/ESPN reported\u00a0Saturday that both schools worked with the Secret Service on audio channels in hopes of keeping communications clear, noting an official timeout for a serious disruption could be an option.<\/p>\n
The Southeastern Conference matchup between the No. 1 Longhorns and No. 14 Volunteers in Knoxville already was one of the biggest games in the country this weekend. Trump came to watch Texas quarterback\u00a0Arch Manning\u00a0play for the first time in the stadium where his uncle Peyton became famous.<\/p>\n

Trump has attended more college football games than any recent sitting president, and he arrived in Knoxville in the midst of a midterm election season and a heated debate over the role of money in college sports that\u00a0Congress is trying to resolve. He has attended national championship games and regular season contests in the SEC and Army vs. Navy.<\/p>\n
He\u00a0also attended Game 3\u00a0of the NBA finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs in June, went to the\u00a02025 Daytona 500 car race, and presented the\u00a0World Cup trophy\u00a0to Spain at the final in July. And last year, he was the first president to\u00a0attend a Super Bowl. He left the Super Bowl after halftime.<\/p>\n
Headset communications emerged as the latest subplot surrounding this presidential visit. Coaches communicate with each other on their headsets throughout the game and also\u00a0call in plays to the quarterback.Disruptions to those communications, from a deafening crowd, technical glitch or presidential security measure, can present problems for coaches and teams.<\/p>\n
Coaches involved in last season\u2019s College Football Playoff championship between Miami and Indiana in New Orleans cited that game as an example of how Trump\u2019s movements affected them.<\/p>\n
Trump left in the fourth quarter of a tense\u00a0Indiana 27-21 victory. Sarkisian said Miami coach Mario Cristobal told him Trump\u2019s leaving at that point disrupted communications on the Hurricanes\u2019 final possession, which ended with a game-clinching interception.<\/p>\n
Indiana coach Curt Signetti disputed Sarkisian\u2019s version of events around the final drive. But Cignetti noted communications briefly cut off in a key moment of the fourth quarter as Indiana was trying to protect its lead.<\/p>\n
In his weekly radio show on Thursday, Cignetti recalled that when Trump left the game \u201caround the 7-minute mark \u2026 there were two or three plays we couldn\u2019t hear at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
That included a\u00a0misdirection touchdown run\u00a0by Miami\u2019s Malachi Toney.<\/p>\n
\u201cCommunication device came back right after the (Toney\u2019s) touchdown,\u201d Cignetti said. \u201cAnd we had no problem the rest of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House on Friday insisted Trump\u2019s departure caused no problems for the teams.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, President Trump\u2019s departure from the CFP championship in January did not cause headset or comms issues for the teams,\u201d the White House\u00a0posted on X.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s unclear if Trump\u2019s presence at other games like the Super Bowl have created issues. An NFL spokesman declined comment Friday when asked if league officials work with the Secret Service when a president attends a game like the Super Bowl to minimize any impact on team communications.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s visit to Neyland Stadium<\/h4>\n
University of Tennessee officials sent a midweek advisory encouraging fans to arrive \u201csignificantly earlier\u201d than for a typical game. Neyland Stadium has an official capacity of 101,915 with this game the 30th consecutive sellout.<\/p>\n
