{"id":5416,"date":"2026-09-27T00:56:05","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T00:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=5416"},"modified":"2026-09-27T00:56:05","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T00:56:05","slug":"87-year-old-womans-eviction-from-madrid-apartment-sparks-protest-against-spains-housing-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=5416","title":{"rendered":"87-year-old woman&#8217;s eviction from Madrid\u00a0apartment sparks protest against Spain&#8217;s housing crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2296746693-e1790462988220.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Madrid on Saturday to protest against Spain\u2019s\u00a0housing crisis\u00a0and ask for protective measures for tenants, anti-fraud rules, and a ban on evictions without alternative housing.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protest came in reaction to the dramatic eviction on Wednesday of an 87-year-old woman from the\u00a0Madrid\u00a0apartment she had lived in for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re here because housing is a problem that already affects all of society, all ages and classes,\u201d said protester Dora Garcia, a 55-year-old nurse. \u201cAnd we can\u2019t keep maintaining this. Housing is a right and we don\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taken out of her home on a stretcher in the upscale Retiro neighborhood, Mar\u00eda del Carmen Abascal was greeted by protesters and supporters as she was loaded into an ambulance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spanish media reported that Abascal\u2019s father first rented the property in 1956 and she continued as the tenant after her parents died, during which time there was a rent cap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The building changed ownership in 2018, and Abascal was offered the opportunity to buy the apartment but could not afford it, according to the Madrid Tenants\u2019 Union, which organized Saturday\u2019s\u00a0protest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urbagesti\u00f3n, an investment fund that later bought the unit, raised her monthly rent from 500 euros ($570) to 2,650 euros. It subsequently lowered the rent to 1,650 euros, which Abascal still could not afford on her pension, the union said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courts blocked three previous attempts to evict her. Extensive media coverage turned Abascal into a symbol of Spain\u2019s housing crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis whole housing situation is heartbreaking. Maricarmen has been, in a way, the last straw that sparked this social unrest, but we\u2019ve been dealing with this whole issue for a long time now,\u201d said protester Sim\u00f3n de la Riva, 43, a teacher. \u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that vulture funds are buying up homes, that people can\u2019t afford to live, that entire families are being evicted, and that an elderly woman has been evicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the march, protesters sat down in the Puerta del Sol plaza with apparent plans to stay put. Some even pitched tents to stay at least the night \u2014 or until police forcibly removed them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rising costs and a housing shortage are pricing many Spaniards\u00a0out of the market, despite strong economic growth in Europe\u2019s fourth-largest economy. Incomes have not kept pace. Analysts say tourism and immigration-driven population growth in cities have placed further pressure on the limited housing supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bank of Spain estimated that the country had a shortage of about 550,000 homes last year, with Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia accounting for a substantial share.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain\u00a0ranks near the bottom of countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development for public rental housing, which represents less than 2% of its available supply. The European Union average is 8%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain previously built homes with public funds that were later sold into private ownership, removing them from the public housing stock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI haven\u2019t managed to defend my home, but I have fought so that others can learn to fight for what\u2019s theirs,\u201d Abascal said in a video shared on Friday by the tenants\u2019 union.
