Navya Tuteja, a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, the selective magnet school outside Washington, D.C., found me the way she finds her local politicians: through a cold email with an idea. She has a strong academic record and a shot at speaking at graduation (her school doesn\u2019t name a valedictorian, but she says she would probably qualify if it did). Two months ago, she launched Raaha, a free platform that lets neurodivergent job seekers score a listing for fit before they apply. It already has more than 1,000 users and 20,000 job listings.<\/p>\n

\n

The idea traces back to her mother, who is hard of hearing, and to a pattern Tuteja kept noticing among neurodivergent people: job postings written entirely from the employer\u2019s side, heavy on requirements and silent on what the day-to-day actually feels like. Raaha\u2019s quiz scores a listing against several factors so candidates can get a realistic read before spending hours on an application. Tuteja bootstrapped the tool herself and is keeping it free while she builds traction; the eventual business model would have employers and workforce organizations pay to use the platform or improve their listings.<\/p>\n

She still plans to go to college. But if Raaha keeps growing at its current pace, she says, she\u2019d consider running it full-time.<\/p>\n

The exception to a bad year for teenagers<\/h2>\n

Tuteja\u2019s grades stand out right now for a reason unrelated to college admissions. The OECD\u2019s PISA 2025 results, released this month, show reading and math scores at record lows across nearly all participating countries. Across OECD nations, reading is down 28 points since 2015 and math is down 22, and roughly 29% of 15-year-olds now score as low performers in all three core subjects tested. American 15-year-olds posted their lowest reading scores in about 25 years. Researchers studying the decline have pointed to screens, shrinking attention spans, and generative AI.<\/p>\n

Tuteja doesn\u2019t dispute that theory. She just says she was structurally protected from the worst of it, and the protection wasn\u2019t her idea. Her school\u2019s WiFi blocks ChatGPT, Claude, and similar tools outright. \u201cIt made me use it in school way less,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I guess, as annoying as it was, it was still good, in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n

She doesn\u2019t think generative AI is inherently the problem, though she worries a bit that it\u2019s making people dumber. \u201cPeople just don\u2019t know how to use it properly,\u201d she said. Not being able to reach for it during the school day forced her to do exam-relevant thinking on her own, a habit she kept after hours, when the ban no longer applied and she had a company to build.<\/p>\n

Where she draws her own line<\/h2>\n

Tuteja is president of her school\u2019s AI club, and she now applies voluntarily the discipline the ban once imposed. She wrote Raaha\u2019s underlying algorithm herself and used AI for the more mechanical parts of the build, mainly cleaning up the website\u2019s design. Day to day, she uses it to draft emails or make sense of messy information when she\u2019s short on time. Schoolwork gets none of it. \u201cI try to do all my learning myself, especially for stuff I have exams for,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

National data suggests how much of an outlier that makes her. RAND polling found the share of students regularly using AI for homework rose from 48% to 62% between May and December 2025, even as two-thirds of those students said the technology was hurting their critical thinking. A study published in Science<\/em> of more than 95,000 undergraduates found that daily AI users were nearly four times as likely as monthly users to say they\u2019d used it to cheat, 26% versus 7%.<\/p>\n

Owning up to the AI in the name<\/h2>\n

Tuteja put \u201cAI\u201d directly into Raaha\u2019s branding, yet she still hesitates when asked which specific tools she used to build it. \u201cPeople are going to have a different impression,\u201d she said. Tell people you used AI to build something, she explained, and \u201cthey\u2019re going to be like, \u2018Oh, you didn\u2019t do it, it was all AI.\u2019 People don\u2019t think you had any thought behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That instinct matches recent survey data on AI disclosure. A 2026 Atlassian study of roughly 1,000 U.S. knowledge workers found that colleagues who disclosed AI use were rated far lazier than those who didn\u2019t, even when the work was identical. A KPMG and University of Melbourne survey of more than 48,000 people across 47 countries found 57% had hidden their AI use or passed off AI output as their own, mostly out of fear of looking less competent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s good to own up to it if you\u2019re using it right,\u201d Tuteja said. \u201cIf you\u2019re very transparent about what you use it for, and you actually didn\u2019t use it to create your whole company, then I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any reason to be embarrassed.\u201d She thinks the taboo persists because outsiders have no way to check, summing up the criticism as: \u201cYou just pay for the $200 Claude plan and it can do everything for you \u2026 There\u2019s no way to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

A household living the experiment<\/h2>\n

A few days after our first conversation, Tuteja\u2019s parents joined a video call, sitting side by side. They wanted to weigh in on a question I had raised with their daughter: what the right balance looks like between restricting AI in school and letting kids loose with it. They\u2019re navigating this tension at home in real time, with a daughter who runs an AI company and leads an AI club.<\/p>\n

Deepti and Rohit Tuteja moved from Delhi to the U.S. about 17 years ago, first to Atlanta, where Navya was born, then to Richmond, the New York\u2013New Jersey area, back to Atlanta, and finally to Northern Virginia for work. Deepti holds a double master\u2019s degree from India and completed a Harvard program while working full-time as head of data and risk at E-Trade. She now leads data management oversight for TD Bank across the U.S. and sits on the board of a Harvard-affiliated venture capital fund, where she reviews startup pitches professionally, though she said she has stayed out of advising her daughter\u2019s company in that capacity. Rohit trained as a lawyer in India, moved into privacy and cybersecurity consulting at Deloitte, and now runs cybersecurity governance, risk, and compliance for Sentara Health, a Virginia hospital and insurance network.<\/p>\n

Navya is an only child. \u201cAll our attention has been on this,\u201d Rohit said. \u201cA lot of pressure. She didn\u2019t like it.\u201d Of the two parents, he describes himself as the more \u201cchilled\u201d one. Both described a kid who needed almost no supervision long before any of this started. \u201cFor the past at least six years, we have never had a chance where we had to wake her up,\u201d Deepti said.<\/p>\n

A second project, and a harder question about the ban<\/h2>\n

Partway through the conversation, Rohit mentioned that Navya has been working with local state senators. She built a separate tool called Legible, which translates special-education paperwork, such as IEPs and 504 plans, into plain language for families who find the bureaucratic versions hard to parse, especially those newer to the American school system. She built it after noticing that when AI tools summarize disability information from state databases, they often drop the sourcing a parent would actually need. That led her to develop a proposed transparency standard she calls Traceable Accessibility, which she has pitched to local state senators and discussed with the U.S. Department of Education as a possible listed resource. Reaching out to lawmakers, she said, was entirely her own idea\u2014the same instinct that landed her in my inbox.<\/p>\n

Asked whether she wished AI were more regulated, Tuteja didn\u2019t hesitate: \u201cI think a hundred percent.\u201d But pressed on the school ban, she took the opposite position from the one her own story seems to support. \u201cI don\u2019t think banning it is the solution,\u201d she said. \u201cI think you have to regulate it in the right way. So that\u2019s what I\u2019ve been trying to do right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rohit said the family has coached her against shortcuts from the start. \u201cWe try to coach her, at least build that cultural value as well, that you\u2019re not getting anywhere by cheating,\u201d he said. \u201cHard work is the only way.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the tension at the heart of her story. The ban worked on her by taking the choice away. Her own view is that taking the choice away is the wrong long-term fix, and that the real work lies in regulation and in teaching people to make that choice themselves\u2014a slower, less exportable lesson than a school district flipping a switch on the WiFi.<\/p>\n

Both parents said they recognize the disclosure anxiety their daughter described from their own jobs. Deepti is building internal agents at TD Bank and talks with her team about how their jobs will change. Rohit relayed advice from another executive who no longer asks employees whether they used AI, only what prompts they used and how they refined them. \u201cThere is no point beating people up that don\u2019t use AI,\u201d Rohit said, \u201cwhereas everyone is going out and buying licenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tuteja, for her part, built her mother an agent that answers Deepti\u2019s texts when Tuteja doesn\u2019t have time to reply herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m asking her to create one for me to give me stock tips every morning,\u201d Rohit said. \u201cI\u2019m still in queue.\u201d<\/p>\n
