The\u00a0U.K.\u00a0government\u2019s\u00a0minister for\u00a0artificial\u00a0intelligence has warned that nations will need to \u201charden their\u00a0defenses\u201d against AI risk after a former Anthropic employee said that a human extinction-level event could happen in the next decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Answering a question from\u00a0Fortune<\/em>\u00a0on the claim by former Anthropic worker, Jacob Coxon, Kanishka Narayan said he took the warnings seriously. Coxon warned in a\u00a0post on X, which has been seen 175\u00a0million\u00a0times, that \u201cthe people building AI earnestly believe that it could\u00a0kill\u00a0us all by the end of the decade.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Anthropic scientist, Evan Hubinger, agreed with Coxon, saying the risk was greater than 10%. At the weekend Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft,\u00a0told NBC\u2019s\u00a0Meet the Press<\/em>\u00a0that, in the wrong hands, AI was\u00a0\u201ccertainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first thing to say is that when people in labs tell you that they\u2019re very worried about this, you have to take that seriously,\u201d Narayan said at the annual conference of the\u00a0Labour\u00a0Party, the governing party in the\u00a0U.K. \u201cYou\u00a0have to\u00a0harden and build your defenses. The risks have only grown, so testing is good but clearly insufficient.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to lead the world in being able to\u00a0convene\u00a0[countries] from the G20 next year as part of our presidency. Of course, we want to be fundamental drivers of the architecture of principles that are going to hopefully come out of that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.K.\u00a0Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the United Nations General Assembly last week that AI frontier labs were a \u201cmultiplier of risk\u201d and that the U.K.\u00a0could play the role of\u00a0honest\u00a0broker\u00a0between competing national interests. Democrats and Republicans have called for new legislation aimed at regulating labs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S.\u00a0President Donald Trump, who said that talk of AI risks was a hoax, has warned that controlling the pace of US frontier lab research would hand China a significant advantage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI have concerns that if we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0win AI,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to be put in\u00a0a very bad\u00a0position. We are leading China right now by\u00a0a pretty good\u00a0period,\u201d Trump said. The White House is reported to have warned G20 members to take a \u201chands off\u201d approach to new, global regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Narayan, who sits in the Prime\u00a0Minister\u2019s Cabinet, the U.K.\u2019s most powerful political body, said that there were\u00a0a number of\u00a0risks associated with AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe candid sense I have is that I\u2019m much more focused on risks today in terms of a secular uplift of cybersecurity risks that each of us in our organizations and lives,\u201d he said. \u201c[I am] concerned about the proliferation of these tools in a way that\u00a0drives up\u00a0biochemical risk as well, and yes, I am concerned about instances where models go beyond what humans have asked them to do as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sort of logical loops you\u00a0have to\u00a0jump through to make that an existential question\u00a0are\u00a0quite significant and severe, and so\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0an indication\u00a0of how I think about the portfolio of risks here.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve\u00a0got to do the best testing in the world to be able to understand the risks and mitigate them.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0doing that.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0been doing that for three years.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0very uniquely placed compared to any other country to be able to do that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Narayan also said there were many positives from AI,\u00a0including in\u00a0job creation, searching for jobs and productivity. He said that the\u00a0UK\u00a0had underplayed the role of innovation and technology IP in driving economic growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe, as organizations, as individuals, as government, as the private sector, we actually have agency in whether this ends up being a technology that augments human labor, or is a technology that automates human labor,\u201d he told a meeting\u00a0organized\u00a0by the Resolution Foundation, a think tank.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are ways of doing technological adoption that means more jobs and more productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
