President Donald Trump\u00a0on Saturday defended data centers that power artificial intelligence projects but have become a contentious campaign issue nationwide, as he took his midterm tour to Ohio to insist his party will keep its\u00a0majorities in Congress\u00a0despite\u00a0steep political headwinds.<\/p>\n

\n

Trump took several minutes during his campaign rally in southwestern Ohio to promote his administration\u2019s action on data centers, saying he was seeking to ensure they \u201cbenefit local communities\u201d and praising Republican Sen. Jon Husted for an ill-fated attempt to push forward legislation on the issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, there\u2019s so much money to be made for Ohio. You can\u2019t just turn them off. They\u2019ll go to China,\u201d Trump said, repeating his defense of data centers that he had made before. The crowd, which had reacted enthusiastically as the president talked about other policies, was far more muted during the data centers remark.<\/p>\n

The massive warehouse campuses generating energy for AI projects have become a\u00a0toxic political issue, drawing bipartisan opposition\u00a0in races across the country, with voters concerned about their impact on electricity prices, farmland and water supplies. It\u2019s become especially acute in Ohio, where Husted has been repeatedly attacked for his role in attracting data centers to Ohio as lieutenant governor.<\/p>\n

Trump is embarking on what he says will be a 32-day blitz ahead of the\u00a0Nov. 3 elections, hitting the\u00a0deep red states\u00a0of Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama this week before pivoting to Ohio, a\u00a0battleground state\u00a0that\u2019s home to one of the top-tier Senate races this cycle.<\/p>\n

Husted \u2014 who was appointed to fill the Senate vacancy left by now-Vice President JD Vance \u2014 is running to win the seat outright. There is likely no path to a Senate majority for Democrats without flipping Ohio, where former\u00a0three-term Sen. Sherrod Brown\u00a0is trying to return to the Senate after losing to Republican Bernie Moreno two years ago.<\/p>\n

Since last year, Democrats have listed Ohio, along with states such as North Carolina and Maine, as key races to win control of the Senate. And this past week, the head of the Senate GOP\u2019s campaign arm said Ohio is among 10 battleground races that are \u201cwithin striking distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news for us is that Jon Husted is a closer,\u201d\u00a0Sen. Tim Scott,\u00a0the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told reporters. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing the gap that was there between the two candidates, which was just a few points, now it is right at a dead-even race. So this is as tight as ticks, as we say in South Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n

Data centers are a hot issue in the Ohio race<\/h4>\n

At his rallies, Trump has been trying to convince voters that the economy is better than they feel it is, even though\u00a0polls show Americans are frustrated\u00a0with the way he\u2019s handled it. The\u00a0high cost of living, including gas prices\u00a0elevated by Trump\u2019s war on Iran, is a top issue in the Dayton area, too. And just days before Trump\u2019s rally,\u00a0nearly 1,400 people were laid off\u00a0from a truck factory in nearby Springfield.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour state is booming. Every \u2014 I hate to say it \u2014 every state is booming,\u201d Trump insisted Saturday. \u201cThey\u2019re all booming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s rally comes as Republicans worry that Husted\u2019s campaign has failed to adequately catch fire with voters in the Republican-dominated state. Brown and allied groups have hammered Husted for his data-centers role, and the NRSC has pinpointed it as a political vulnerability.<\/p>\n

The GOP-controlled Senate\u00a0tried to advance legislation\u00a0this past week sponsored by Husted that would ask utility regulators to effectively charge large power users more, as consumers\u00a0struggle with high energy costs. But it was blocked by nearly all Democrats.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got to remember, Sherrod Brown was for data centers, and Jon Husted is for data centers being responsible,\u201d Scott told reporters this week. \u201cIf a community doesn\u2019t want them, he doesn\u2019t want them either.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Trump has become one of\u00a0data centers\u2019 most vocal proponents, shrugging aside voter concerns and arguing that the U.S. cannot cede advancements in AI to China.<\/p>\n

\u201cSenator Jon Husted gave billions in tax breaks to Big Tech to make sure they would build their data centers in Ohio,\u201d Brown wrote on X on Friday, ahead of Trump\u2019s visit. \u201cNow, he\u2019s making Ohioans foot the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brown\u2019s campaign also has hammered Husted for donations he\u2019s received from\u00a0retail magnate Les Wexner,\u00a0who once employed the late convicted sex offender\u00a0Jeffrey Epstein.\u00a0Husted has donated remaining Wexner contributions to an anti-human trafficking charity.<\/p>\n

There were several Epstein-themed signs outside the Vandalia school where the rally was being held, as more than a hundred protesters lined the road with a slew of anti-Trump and anti-Husted signs.<\/p>\n

But inside the school\u2019s gymnasium, the boisterous crowd \u2014 decked out in red \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d hats and \u201cTrump 47\u201d jerseys \u2014 greeted each Republican candidate enthusiastically as they awaited the president\u2019s arrival.<\/p>\n

From the stage, Husted said the state had been through \u201chard times,\u201d noting his dad had worked at a factory that closed down. But he said Republicans in the state had turned it around.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe now have the most jobs and the lowest unemployment rate we\u2019ve ever had in the history of Ohio,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the governor\u2019s race, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy faces Democrat Dr. Amy Acton, the state\u2019s former COVID-era health director.<\/p>\n

A wealthy biotech entrepreneur and 2024 presidential candidate, Ramaswamy\u2019s star appeal among conservatives led to quick backing by Ohio Republicans and hopes of an easy victory in the Republican-dominated state. However, despite a massive fundraising lead and more than $12 million spent in campaign advertising, he is now locked in a close fight with Acton with weeks to go until Election Day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to this state and to this country for giving a kid like me opportunities that would not have been available to my family in any other country on planet earth,\u201d Ramaswamy said at the rally ahead of Trump\u2019s arrival, as he underscored the American dream for his Indian immigrant family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
