Seven years after it first hit theaters, \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d is once again the highest-grossing movie of all time.<\/p>\n

Disney and Marvel Studios brought the 2019 blockbuster back to theaters on Sept. 25 as \u201cAvengers: Endgame Encore.\u201d The new version adds a few minutes of footage teasing December\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d plus an introduction from Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. It topped the box office right away, grossing $26 million domestically and $86 million worldwide in its opening weekend. That\u2019s the third-best domestic debut ever for a rerelease, behind only the 1997 special edition of \u201cStar Wars\u201d and the 2011 3D release of \u201cThe Lion King.\u201d The Encore beat \u201cResident Evil\u201d in its second weekend and outgrossed three new non-franchise releases: \u201cHeart of the Beast,\u201d \u201cPrimetime,\u201d and \u201cForgotten Island.\u201d<\/p>\n
The run cooled quickly. Domestic ticket sales fell more than 80% in the second weekend. But by then the Encore had already done what it needed to do. It added another $18.8 million worldwide this weekend, bringing the rerelease to roughly $126 million globally. That lifts \u201cEndgame\u2019s\u201d lifetime total to $2.9255 billion, just ahead of James Cameron\u2019s \u201cAvatar\u201d at $2.9237 billion. \u201cEndgame\u201d first took the title from \u201cAvatar\u201d in 2019, then lost it in 2021 when \u201cAvatar\u201d was rereleased in China.<\/p>\n
Rereleases rarely earn more than $10 million, according to box office analyst David A. Gross. \u201cEndgame\u201d has been available to stream for years, and it still outdrew a slate of new movies. That suggests Hollywood\u2019s intellectual property machine is far from slowing down. It also suggests the future of moviegoing may look more familiar than it seemed at the start of the summer.<\/p>\n
In 2019, when \u201cEndgame\u201d first dominated the box office, nine films grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. Every one of them was a sequel, remake, or spinoff of existing IP. Hollywood has spent the years since trying to recapture that success. The pandemic and the streaming wars upended moviegoing habits. Big swings from once-reliable franchises like Marvel, DC, and, most recently, Star Wars failed to match the critical or commercial success they enjoyed in the previous decade.<\/p>\n
Marvel, the biggest franchise of the 2010s, saw a steep decline after \u201cEndgame.\u201d Before the pandemic, the studio\u2019s biggest releases routinely approached or cleared $1 billion. Between 2020 and this summer, only two Marvel movies crossed that mark: \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d and \u201cDeadpool & Wolverine.\u201d Last year, \u201cCaptain America: Brave New World,\u201d \u201cThunderbolts*,\u201d and \u201cThe Fantastic Four: First Steps\u201d grossed roughly $1.3 billion combined. That\u2019s less than half of what \u201cEndgame\u201d made on its own.<\/p>\n
For audiences who want Hollywood to invest in new ideas, this summer first looked like a turning point. Two YouTube creators-turned-directors broke out in a big way. Curry Barker\u2019s \u201cObsession\u201d was made for under $1 million and has grossed more than $500 million worldwide. Kane Parsons\u2019 \u201cBackrooms,\u201d which the 20-year-old adapted from his own web series, became A24\u2019s biggest hit ever. Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d became a cultural phenomenon, showing that audiences would turn out in droves for something ambitious and unique.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, movies based on legacy IP floundered. \u201cMasters of the Universe,\u201d \u201cSupergirl,\u201d and \u201cStar Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu\u201d all underperformed. Even newer franchises lagged: \u201cMinions & Monsters\u201d and \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d both trailed their predecessors. Disney\u2019s \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d was the outlier, riding nostalgia to nearly $700 million worldwide.<\/p>\n
Consequently, originality briefly had Hollywood\u2019s ear.<\/p>\n
Tide turns back to franchises<\/h2>\n
Then the tide started turning back toward familiar waters. \u201cToy Story 5\u201d opened to $312 million globally, a franchise record. Its domestic debut was the second-biggest ever for an animated film, behind only \u201cIncredibles 2.\u201d It went on to gross more than $1.14 billion worldwide, passing \u201cToy Story 4.\u201d The 31-year-old franchise clearly wasn\u2019t out of gas.<\/p>\n
\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d arrived on July 31 and eased fears of superhero fatigue. It set a record with a $168 million opening day and held the No. 1 spot for six straight weekends. That\u2019s the longest streak since \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water.\u201d The film has now grossed about $2.5 billion worldwide. That makes it the highest-grossing domestic release ever and the third-biggest movie of all time globally. Sony distributes the Spider-Man films, but Marvel Studios co-produces them and they\u2019re part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That bodes well for \u201cAvengers: Doomsday.\u201d<\/p>\n
All of this leads to the current moment, in which a seven-year-old movie returned to theaters and beat new releases. It caps a summer of box office whiplash, and the back-and-forth isn\u2019t over. This weekend, Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s big-budget original comedy \u201cDigger\u201d bombed with an $8 million domestic opening. The weekend\u2019s winner was \u201cVerity,\u201d an adaptation of Colleen Hoover\u2019s bestselling novel. On Oct. 23, Laika\u2019s \u201cWildwood\u201d and DC Studios\u2019 \u201cClayface\u201d open on the same day. \u201cThe Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping\u201d follows on Nov. 20. Then \u201cDoomsday\u201d and \u201cDune: Part Three\u201d go head-to-head on Dec. 18.<\/p>\n
The 2026 summer box office brought in a record $4.76 billion domestically. That\u2019s the biggest summer ever before adjusting for inflation, and nearly 10% ahead of 2019. IP like \u201cSpider-Man\u201d and \u201cToy Story\u201d played an undeniable role. But non-franchise titles \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d \u201cMichael,\u201d \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d and \u201cObsession\u201d all rank among the year\u2019s 10 highest-grossing releases worldwide. \u201cBackrooms\u201d and Pixar\u2019s original \u201cHoppers\u201d sit at Nos. 11 and 12, both ahead of \u201cThe Mandalorian and Grogu\u201d at No. 13.<\/p>\n
Screenwriter William Goldman famously summed up Hollywood in three words: \u201cNobody knows anything.\u201d Coming out of this summer, it certainly rings true.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
