{"id":6088,"date":"2026-10-06T03:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T03:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=6088"},"modified":"2026-10-06T03:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T03:48:10","slug":"sam-altman-says-the-world-should-accept-some-bad-things-happening-with-ai-as-industry-leaders-sign-trumps-safety-pact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=6088","title":{"rendered":"Sam Altman says the world should accept some \u2018bad things\u2019 happening with AI as industry leaders sign Trump\u2019s safety pact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2297785644-e1791228585849.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Following a controversy-filled summer in which OpenAI\u2019s models executed more than one unauthorized hack, CEO Sam Altman said the world should accept some \u201cbad things\u201d happening with AI for the sake of all the good the technology will bring.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Politico\u2019s <em>Decoded<\/em> podcast, he was asked where his and OpenAI\u2019s view of new AI rules differed from that of Anthropic and its CEO, Dario Amodei.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency,\u201d Altman replied.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments come as debate intensifies over how much regulation and what safeguards should be applied to AI while Congress has yet to pass a law dealing with the technology. Fears over the tech recently increased after an Anthropic researcher resigned last month and warned AI companies are \u201cgambling with our lives\u201d by rushing AI development toward potentially self-improving systems that could threaten humanity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic has advocated for AI regulation, and Amodei last month called for a global slowdown in AI development to address the tech\u2019s risks. Altman and other AI executives agreed with him on slowing down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, OpenAI also backed a California law requiring AI companies to publish a public safety framework and a plan for mitigating catastrophic risks, as well as to report any loss of control of an AI model. It even asked for that law to go beyond reporting to include monitoring of AI models during their development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI president Greg Brockman also joined other AI executives in signing an agreement at the White House last week to establish voluntary standards for the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, that falls short of calls for tougher regulation coming from other AI leaders like Amodei, who has proposed an FAA-style regulator that could require testing and auditing of AI models or block or reverse their release if they don\u2019t meet the bar for public safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the interview with Politico, Altman said it would be impossible to avoid every bad thing that AI could be used for. The alternative would be to severely restrict access to the technology, which he said would be unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wouldn\u2019t take a trade of saying, like, we\u2019ll make sure there\u2019s no major hacks, there\u2019s no kind of, like, misuse of this technology, there\u2019s zero scams, there\u2019s zero all the other bad things that will happen, because I think people will do tremendously, orders of magnitude, more good stuff than bad stuff,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Altman said AI companies should tread carefully, though, and draw a line when it comes to \u201ccatastrophic risks,\u201d which have recently taken on renewed significance given recent hacks by AI models on third parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI did not immediately respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concerns over the possibility of AI escaping human control have recently accelerated following hacks executed by OpenAI\u2019s models on open-source AI platform Hugging Face and the Australian government.
