Alex Karp says one of his top executives once told him to stop talking about how big Foundry would get.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPlease stop talking to Palantirians about how big Foundry is going to be,\u201d Karp recalled Ted Mabrey saying. \u201cIt\u2019s depressing, and everybody knows you\u2019re out of touch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karp spoke Thursday with Zeta Global CEO David Steinberg at Zeta Live \u201926, Zeta\u2019s annual AI marketing conference. The Palantir CEO said Mabrey, who now runs the company\u2019s commercial business, told him the constant hype was coming off a tad aggressive for employees who had to hear him boast about Foundry constantly.<\/p>\n

The idea stuck\u2014albeit for a little bit: \u201cI had stopped talking to people for like six months,\u201d Karp said. Instead, the CEO said he has a particular way of making decisions, and that often comes at odds with what people think is possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have an esthetic idea of what could work and what won\u2019t work,\u201d Karp said. \u201cAbout once a month, I have some idea that I think is important, and then I know it\u2019s important. Everyone tells me we can never do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Tell me something I want to hear\u2019<\/h2>\n

He said he relies on colleagues he has worked with for years to tell him the truth, and that those relationships are \u201cvery harsh.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, I often tell them, \u2018Can you tell me something I want to hear, please?’\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Foundry, Palantir\u2019s platform for pulling a company\u2019s data into one place and controlling who can see it, is now at the center of its fastest-growing business. In the second quarter, U.S. commercial revenue grew 149% year over year to $764 million, according to the company\u2019s earnings release. Palantir raised its full-year U.S. commercial revenue guidance to more than $3.4 billion, a growth rate of at least 134%. After those results, Karp told investors \u201cfor the first time people believe us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zeta is one of the companies building on it. In June, the two firms announced a deal under which Zeta\u2019s Data Cloud will be rebuilt on Palantir\u2019s Foundry. Steinberg told Adweek<\/em> the seven-year partnership would bring in \u201cover $100 million a year in sales\u201d within \u201cthe next year or so.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Where\u2019s the parasite?\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

During the talk, Karp explained that getting Palantir to the point where it is now took plenty of convincing, simply because investors didn\u2019t get the business. He said Palantir struggled to raise money in its early years because it refused to build software the way investors wanted.<\/p>\n

\u201cNormal software is built to force you to adopt something that\u2019s parasitic,\u201d he said. \u201cThey take every one of those things, turn it into a commodity, and sell it to everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Karp, VCs wanted to hear that clients would be unhappy but couldn\u2019t leave. \u201c\u2018Sticky\u2019 is a metaphor for parasitic,\u201d he said. \u201cI get your data. I get it into something you can\u2019t get rid of. The thing turns into something I can sell to everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

So when he pitched making special operators \u201cmore lethal\u201d and bringing them home, Karp said, investors asked, \u201cBut where\u2019s the parasite?\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Palantir was also mocked for sending engineers to work inside client companies, a model it calls forward-deployed engineering. It has since become one of the fastest-growing jobs in Silicon Valley. Steinberg said Zeta has copied it. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe pivoted a huge part of our business to follow you guys on this because it\u2019s so freaking efficient,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Karp said Palantir has about 4,500 employees and is \u201cnot everyone\u2019s cup of tea.\u201d Some of its best references, he said, come from former staff who left after \u201canother crazy lecture from Karp\u201d and later wanted to come back. In March, Mabrey publicly called on \u201cformer hobbits\u201d to return to \u201cthe Shire,\u201d making more references to its namesake from the Lord of the Rings<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Second-rate AI is costing businesses<\/h2>\n

Also during the AI-focused lecture, Karp argued the tech has changed what poor execution costs a business. In the past, a second-rate software rollout cost a company time and money but rarely sank it, since a firm with a strong moat could get by.<\/p>\n

He used defense as an example. A German government will buy a German company\u2019s missile \u201ceven if it\u2019s B minus because it flies and it\u2019s German,\u201d he said. But a missile that can\u2019t hit targets against Russian weapons is no longer good enough, and getting it there now depends on an AI application layer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour B-minus missile is a triple-plus with this, and your A-plus missile is useless,\u201d he said. \u201cSo that\u2019s just binary.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the same logic applies to every company. Asked what one decision the CEOs in the room should make, Karp told them to identify what makes their business special, get full visibility from the factory floor to the cost of goods, and use AI to strengthen it without letting a model company or a rival learn how it works.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your person down the street gets it right, even if they\u2019re inferior to you, just like the missile, they will outperform you,\u201d Karp said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
