Say goodbye to working Fridays\u2014or possibly ever working at all. That\u2019s the future that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos predicts AI could bring.<\/p>\n

In contrast to his tech peers like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI leader Sam Altman, who have warned about the technology\u2019s potential risks, Bezos recently revealed that he sees a not-so-distant world in which AI-driven productivity makes it easier for people to support themselves, in turn requiring fewer working hours.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome people will decide, I can support my family working three days a week. That\u2019s what productivity in the economy means,\u201d Bezos told Fox News<\/em> this week.<\/p>\nHe added that the abundance of wealth and resources in the AI era will even likely cause a labor shortage because many families will revert to single-income households, meaning one member won\u2019t have to work if they don\u2019t want to.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re not going to need to have a two-earner household. If you want it, fine. If you don\u2019t want to have it, one of the people might drop out,\u201d Bezos said. \u201c\u2026It\u2019s going to be difficult to hire people, because the productivity in the economy will make it so that [if] people don\u2019t want to work two jobs, they won\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bezos says AI poses a challenge for investors\u2014but his own companies stand to gain<\/h2>\n
While Bezos is bullish on AI\u2019s long-term potential, he also acknowledged that investors face a more uncertain path as the technology reshapes the economy.<\/p>\n
When asked whether the AI boom is a bubble, Bezos said that it was \u201chard to know.\u201d The technology itself is real, he argued, even if the rush to capitalize on it means money is flowing to businesses that may not ultimately succeed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I do know is the technology is real. I think this is a good thing for society,\u201d Bezos continued, but added that: \u201cIt\u2019s tricky for investors. Every experiment gets funded\u2014the good ideas and the bad ideas. In the moment, in the tussle of this, it\u2019s hard for investors to know the difference between the good ideas and the bad ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amazon, the company Bezos founded in his garage back in 1995, is one of many major businesses betting heavily on AI. It plans to spend over $200 billion on capital expenditures this year, largely thanks to investments in data centers. At the same time, Amazon has cut about 30,000 corporate roles since late last year, underscoring the tension between AI\u2019s promise of greater productivity and the uncertainty facing workers as companies restructure.<\/p>\n
Bezos also stands to benefit from the AI boom through Blue Origin, his space exploration company, which has ambitions to build data centers in space and eventually expand human activity to the Moon and beyond. The company\u2019s latest funding round reportedly raised $10 billion, valuing the firm at $140 billion\u2014helping Bezos\u2019 net worth soar to $365 billion.<\/p>\n

Bezos isn\u2019t alone in predicting that AI will boost productivity and give workers more flexibility. But business leaders are split on just how dramatically the technology could reshape the workweek\u2014and whether it could eventually make working optional altogether.<\/p>\n
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said that AI will \u201cprobably\u201d lead to a 4-day workweek, while JPMorgan Chase boss Jamie Dimon predicted has predicted employees could eventually work just 3.5 days a week. Bill Gates has gone even further, floating the possibility of a two-day workweek.<\/p>\n
But perhaps no executive has made more sweeping predictions than Elon Musk. The SpaceX founder has predicted that AI and robotics could usher in an era of \u201cuniversal high income,\u201d making money less relevant and freeing people from the need to work.<\/p>\n
Late last year, Musk said: \u201cIn less than 20 years\u2014but maybe even as little as 10 or 15 years\u2014the advancements in AI and robotics will bring us to the point where working is optional.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
