She said a staffer looked at her as if she “couldn’t afford” the mechanical bird she wanted to buy.

How a shopping trip turned into a public feud

The store responded on Instagram that the bird Clarkson had her eye on, a singing and dancing automaton named Molly, is permanently attached to the wall, plays a role in the store’s magic shows and isn’t for sale. It acknowledged that Clarkson’s experience would resonate with anyone who has felt judged in a shop, and said visitors are welcome whether they buy anything or not.

The statement then struck a more aggrieved tone. The store said it had been “suddenly attacked by 8 million people who have never visited our store” and called the backlash a “surreal experience.” That kind of pile-on can rattle any small business owner, or even a big corporation’s CEO.

Clarkson fired back: “So you’re not only rude, you’re also a liar. Got it.” She reposted a photo showing a $15,000 price tag next to the bird. She maintained that an employee had told her it was for sale, then suggested in a condescending tone that she look for something comparable.

A complaint about feeling looked down on had become a public argument. The fight was now about accusations of lying, whether the item was for sale, and what actually happened in the store.

The internet is divided. Many say a star of Clarkson’s stature American Idol winner, talk show host, millions of followers) blasting a small Brooklyn store just isn’t cool. Others criticized how quickly the store went into defensive mode.

Social media users went into detective mode. Some dug up a Sept. 5 Art of Play Instagram post that appeared to feature Molly among items not for sale. Others unearthed older photos and videos showing a $15,000 price tag next to the bird.

In a second statement Monday, Art of Play said the $15,000 price referred to a nearly identical bird owned by Molly’s creator, Seattle-based artist Bliss Kolb, who was willing to sell it. The store said it also offered to show Clarkson a different mechanical bird made by a German clockmaking shop, priced at about $2,000. It said she left after about five minutes in the store, before seeing it.

The real cost of a bad customer experience

The feud has brought the small business widespread exposure, and it may have introduced the shop to customers who didn’t know it existed. For others, the store’s response has already left a bad impression. The shop’s Yelp page has been flooded with one-star reviews, dragging its rating down to 2.8 stars, Forbes reported.

That raises a bigger question: Is winning an argument worth losing a customer, or many customers?

Poor customer experiences can come with a hefty price tag. Globally, consumers cut spending after 47% of bad experiences, according to a Qualtrics XM Institute survey of more than 20,000 people across 14 countries, conducted in 2025. The research estimates that poor customer experiences put $973 billion in U.S. sales at risk in 2026, including $283 billion from customers abandoning businesses altogether. [CONFIRM $283B — see flag above]

Customer service also shapes where people shop. A 2025 NerdWallet survey found that 61% of Americans count good customer service among the most important factors when deciding where to spend their money. That’s nearly as many as those who prioritized the lowest price (62%).

What Art of Play could have done differently

Paul Fombelle, an associate professor of marketing at Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business, told Fortune that the encounter may have been a genuine misunderstanding. The employee’s offer to show Clarkson a comparable bird could have been an attempt to help, rather than an intentional slight, he said.

He credited Art of Play for acknowledging that feeling judged in a store is a common experience, and for emphasizing that everyone is welcome. But he said the business risked losing its audience by shifting the focus from Clarkson’s experience to its own treatment during the backlash.

Apologizing isn’t always the best business strategy, according to Fombelle’s own research. In a study published in the June 2026 issue of the Journal of Consumer Research, Fombelle and coauthors Mason Jenkins and Mary Steffel found that apologizing for service failures customers hadn’t noticed could undermine satisfaction, trust and repeat purchases. But when customers already know something went wrong, an apology can signal warmth and honesty. In that case, there is no previously unnoticed problem to draw attention to. (Fombelle and his coauthors also wrote about the findings for Harvard Business Review.)

Acknowledging a customer’s negative experience doesn’t necessarily mean admitting wrongdoing. “A business can own the customer’s experience… without conceding the facts of the encounter,” Fombelle said.

For example, a store could say, “You left our store feeling unwelcome, and that’s the opposite of what we want anyone to feel.” He stressed that the acknowledgment must be genuine.

That’s different from saying, “We’re sorry you feel that way.” Fombelle called that a non-apology. He said it places the problem in the customer’s mind rather than in the interaction, and it can make the response sound dismissive.

Why the audience matters more than the argument

Turning a complaint into a tit-for-tat public dispute is also a bad idea.

The stakes can extend well beyond the original customer. Once a complaint goes public, Fombelle said, the onlookers “aren’t adjudicating the facts. They’re asking, ‘How would this business treat me?’”

Even a factually correct business can lose the audience, Fombelle said, because onlookers read the tone of its response as “a preview of their own experience.”

That doesn’t mean businesses shouldn’t correct the record or defend their employees. Fombelle said both are legitimate concerns, including for employee morale and retention. But “leading with acknowledgment and then stating your account is different from arguing.”

On Monday, Art of Play said in its statement that it had reached out to Clarkson directly to try to clear the air. Yet on Tuesday, the store reposted another user’s story that read, “Having millions of followers come with responsibility… Being famous doesn’t automatically make you right.”

When to stop arguing

Is it time to put this argument to rest? Both sides could be right. The store may genuinely welcome everyone, and Clarkson may still have walked away feeling looked down on.

Fombelle offered a rule of thumb: “After you’ve given your side once, each additional round is about winning rather than informing, and that’s usually when the costs start to outrun the benefits.”

Art of Play did not immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

#Kelly #Clarksons #bird #feud #Brooklyn #shop #lesson #customer #service

[2
9746,1238,4336,1575,9745,1107,9743,1206,9744,1392,80,45,925,926
post-6641","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance-news","tag-bird","tag-brooklyn","tag-business-advice","tag-business-leadership","tag-clarksons","tag-customer","tag-customer-service","tag-feud","tag-kelly","tag-lesson","tag-service","tag-shop","tag-social-media","tag-x
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
