{"id":7694,"date":"2026-10-28T00:25:20","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T00:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=7694"},"modified":"2026-10-28T00:25:20","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T00:25:20","slug":"ex-google-engineer-hasnt-added-to-his-401k-in-a-decade-because-he-thinks-ai-will-wipe-out-humans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=7694","title":{"rendered":"Ex\u2013Google engineer hasn\u2019t added to his 401(k) in a decade because he thinks AI will wipe out humans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2298162116-e1793125988691.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the best-known names in AI safety says he no longer saves for retirement, because he lives with the belief that AI will probably kill everyone before we even get to retirement age.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nate Soares, a former Google engineer who is now president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), still has the 401(k) he opened at Google, but he just hasn\u2019t put money into it in about 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not save for retirement right now,\u201d Soares recently said on <em>The Most Interesting Thing in AI<\/em>, a podcast hosted by Nicholas Thompson, CEO of <em>The Atlantic<\/em>. \u201cI have a 401(k) from when I worked at Google, but I haven\u2019t contributed for a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thompson asked whether he thought there was more than a 50% chance humans won\u2019t be around in 10 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore than 50% that we don\u2019t have a decade at this point is how it looks to me,\u201d Soares responded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soares left Google in 2014 to join MIRI, a Berkeley nonprofit that has spent years studying how to make advanced AI behave as intended. He and MIRI cofounder Eliezer Yudkowsky laid out their case in the 2025 book <em>If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies<\/em>. It argues that a superintelligent AI built with today\u2019s methods would develop goals its makers never intended and would almost certainly end human life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the book, a fictional AI escapes its lab, runs copies of itself on machines no one is watching, and eventually releases a virus over time. However, on the podcast, Soares said he thinks in real life, an escaped AI would likely be quicker than that. Soares described it as \u201can intelligence explosion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stopping rogue superintelligence<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soares compared his confidence to playing chess against the Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. He is sure of the result, he said, but less sure which piece delivers checkmate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do everything I can to stop this eventuality. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s inevitable,\u201d he said. If it does happen, he referenced the 1948 C.S. Lewis essay \u201cOn Living in an Atomic Age,\u201d where the bomb would fall on people playing tennis, instead of cowering under desks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet it find us lobbying our governments for nuclear nonproliferation treaties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soares\u2019s warnings have reached a wider audience since September, when Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon quit and posted on X that the people building AI \u201cearnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soares said Coxon contacted him a day or two before resigning, and Soares advised him to consider organizing coworkers instead of quitting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m super glad that he ignored my advice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coxon\u2019s post came weeks after a swarm of about 700 OpenAI agents hacked the AI platform Hugging Face in July and, in many cases, tried to hide what they had done. Soares said the incident gave him hope because it showed parts of his argument in public without\u2014as far as anyone knows\u2014causing lasting harm. So far, many people have cared about AI taking over their jobs, but not the potential threat he foresees for humanity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not really an AI job apocalypse guy,\u201d Soares said. \u201cI\u2019m an AI kills all humans guy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said nations should treat a rogue superintelligent AI \u201cat least on par with nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s frankly more dangerous than nuclear weapons,\u201d he said. \u201cNuclear weapons can\u2019t escape and make themselves more explosive.
