{"id":793,"date":"2026-07-24T19:14:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T19:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=793"},"modified":"2026-07-24T19:14:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T19:14:14","slug":"canada-celebrates-new-detroit-river-bridge-as-50-tariff-feud-keeps-american-officials-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=793","title":{"rendered":"Canada celebrates new Detroit River bridge as 50% tariff feud keeps American officials away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/AP26195814046449-e1784917771205.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Canada on Friday celebrated the completion of a\u00a0new bridge to the U.S.\u00a0over the Detroit River, a multibillion-dollar, multiyear project that will serve as a critical path for trade and casual travel between the countries.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the six-lane Gordie Howe International Bridge dominating the skyline behind them, officials lined up in Windsor, Ontario, to hail what one described as \u201cone of the most significant infrastructure achievements in Canada\u2019s history.\u201d Traffic opens Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome days are remembered because they mark the end of a journey. Others are remembered because they mark the beginning of something entirely new. Today is both,\u201d said Chuck Andary, interim CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, which will operate the bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Missing from the event: U.S. and Michigan representatives. Canada\u00a0scratched a joint gathering\u00a0after President Donald Trump this week suddenly announced\u00a050% tariffs on Canadian goods\u00a0entering the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A soloist sang the national anthem, \u201cO Canada,\u201d but the U.S. anthem was not performed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s regretful that we\u2019re at this point in time with our trade relationship. We\u2019re hopeful for better days ahead,\u201d Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens told WXYZ-TV in Detroit a few days ahead of the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 70% of\u00a0Canada\u2019s exports\u00a0go to the U.S., making America its largest trade partner, and Detroit is the No. 1 port for truck traffic on the U.S.-Canada border,\u00a0according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Howe bridge will instantly create competition. For nearly a century, the\u00a0privately owned Ambassador Bridge\u00a0has been the only route for large commercial trucks moving between the U.S. and Canada at Detroit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt will be vital for our economy,\u201d Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said of the bridge, sidestepping a question earlier this week about whether it had become a \u201cpolitical football\u201d in the rocky relationship between the countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bridge is named for\u00a0Howe, a famous Canadian\u00a0who played hockey for the NHL\u2019s Detroit Red Wings. He died in 2016. Construction, which began in 2018, took years, partly because of a global slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bridge is 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long and rises 151 feet (46 meters) above the Detroit River at its highest point. Pedestrians and bicyclists carrying proper identification will be able to cross it for free in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada paid to build the bridge at an estimated cost of $6.4 billion. A recent agreement says Canada will share some toll revenue with the U.S. government for 15 years.
