The United States paused its attacks on\u00a0Iran\u00a0for a second straight day Sunday and Tehran said it had done so too, as efforts continued to bring the countries back to negotiations on an\u00a0interim ceasefire deal\u00a0largely undermined by recent exchanges of fire.<\/p>\n

It was not clear\u00a0why the U.S. has paused\u00a0after targeting Iranian coastal areas and infrastructure in a nearly two-week escalation sparked by Iran\u2019s firing at ships trying to transit the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to questions Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cPresident (Donald) Trump has always been consistent in saying he prefers a diplomatic solution, but he continues to retain all options if Iran continues terrorist activities in the Strait of Hormuz or against allies,\u201d White House communications director Steven Cheung said, adding: \u201cIt would be wise for Iran to work toward a negotiated deal. Otherwise, they know what will happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since the U.S. has halted attacks for the past two nights, Iran has as well, its army spokesperson told Iran\u2019s state TV on Sunday. Tehran in recent days has counterattacked against countries in the region hosting U.S. military forces,\u00a0killing at least three\u00a0at a base in Jordan.<\/p>\n
A regional official calls the pause a \u2018positive signal\u2019<\/h4>\n
The 60-day period that began when the interim deal was signed by both countries in mid-June is now well into its second half, and major issues that were meant to be negotiated -\u2013 notably\u00a0Iran\u2019s nuclear program\u00a0at the heart of tensions -\u2013 remain set aside as mediators try to keep both sides talking.<\/p>\n
A regional official involved in mediation efforts said diplomacy was underway and that a pause in U.S. and Iranian strikes was a \u201cpositive signal that helps their efforts to de-escalate.\u201d<\/p>\n
The official said both countries want to return to\u00a0the interim ceasefire deal\u00a0and that a compromise being negotiated centers on having Iran run vessel transit through the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz\u00a0with fewer restrictions on ships. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n
Concerns continued about shipping on the strait and now on another crucial waterway in the region, the\u00a0Bab al-Mandeb strait\u00a0to the Red Sea. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen last week threatened a blockade of Saudi shipping there.<\/p>\n
Global energy supplies and the economy remain in the balance as\u00a0gasoline prices have risen again.<\/p>\n
Iran on Sunday said it continued to speak with Oman about managing the safe passage of ships on the Strait of Hormuz, which passes between the countries. Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said talks had made progress and continued.<\/p>\n
Baghaei also said the strait\u2019s status remained unchanged. Tehran has asserted that the interim deal with the U.S. allows it to manage shipping on the waterway for now, and it has objected to U.S. efforts to support a route through the strait that passes close to Oman instead.<\/p>\n
The U.S. military on Saturday said its\u00a0recently reimposed naval blockade against Iran continued, with a dozen commercial ships redirected, two disabled and two boarded. U.S. forces \u201cremain highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
Netanyahu says he \u2018fully\u2019 backs Trump\u2019s efforts<\/h4>\n
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to travel to the United States and meet with Trump in Washington on Tuesday, his office has said. They last met in Washington in February, weeks before they\u00a0launched the war\u00a0on Iran that killed senior leaders including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n
The Iranian-backed Hezbollah fired at Israel two days after the war began, and Israel responded with airstrikes and ground forces in southern Lebanon. Since then, the U.S. has supported landmark direct talks between Lebanon and Israel to try to calm that front and find a way to disarm Hezbollah.<\/p>\n
Netanyahu on Sunday told Fox News he \u201cfully\u201d backs Trump\u2019s efforts to weaken Iran and press it to end its nuclear program, adding: \u201cIf he can do so without returning to intense military fighting, that\u2019s fine. Why not?\u201d<\/p>\n
The prime minister indicated he would not present new information to \u201cour good friend\u201d Trump and instead would listen to \u201cwhat he has in mind, because I think in many ways, it\u2019s his decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Netanyahu warned that if Iran again attacks Israel, directly or with armed proxies, \u201cit will make a terrible mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
