{"id":901,"date":"2026-07-27T02:36:05","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T02:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=901"},"modified":"2026-07-27T02:36:05","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T02:36:05","slug":"romania-scrambles-f-16-jets-to-shoot-down-a-suspected-russian-shahed-type-drone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vaultinsider.top\/?p=901","title":{"rendered":"Romania scrambles F-16 jets to shoot down a suspected Russian &#8216;Shahed type&#8217; drone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2232437003-e1785089282253.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Romania shot down\u00a0a suspected Russian drone\u00a0after it crossed into its airspace on Sunday \u2014 the third such incursion in three days in the Eastern European nation that\u2019s both a European Union and a NATO member, the country\u2019s president said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two Romanian F-16 fighter jets scrambled from the Fete\u0219ti airbase, under NATO\u2019s operational command, and shot down the drone over the Black Sea, the military alliance said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA new drone was shot down this morning, at 10:13, by an F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, over the territorial waters of Romania, in the Sulina\u2013Chilia area,\u201d Romanian President Nicusor Dan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that authorities found that one of the earlier intercepted drones appears to be \u201ca Shahed type, used by the Russian Federation in the war of aggression against Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the fourth recent downing by Romania of a drone violating NATO airspace in coordination with the alliance, said Col. Martin O\u2019Donnell, a spokesperson for NATO\u2019s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, known as SHAPE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the last three interceptions, Romanian jets shot down a drone in the sky above Estonia in May, he said. Romanian pilots and planes are based in Lithuania from where they have broad strike capabilities as part of NATO\u2019s force posture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we continue to prove, NATO is constantly on the watch and prepared to defend itself from any threat,\u201d O\u2019Donnell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Romania has acquired the MEROPS counter-drone system, which fires relatively cheap, three-feet long drones to take down incoming Shahed and other variants. That system is part of a broader hardening across the military alliance of NATO\u2019s long eastern border against drone threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, a Russian drone that was part of an attack on Ukraine\u00a0went astray and struck an apartment building in\u00a0eastern Romania, injuring two people and raising fears\u00a0the war\u00a0could spill over into the alliance\u2019s territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is inadmissible and intolerable that the Russian Federation continues to violate Romanian airspace, which is also NATO and European Union airspace,\u201d President Dan said. \u201cSuch actions are unacceptable and we treat them with all seriousness, together with our allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO and EU ally Belgium said Sunday\u2019s incursion was a \u201cstark reminder of the ongoing threat Russia\u2019s war poses to European security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBelgium stands firmly with Romania after several drones were shot down over its territory in the past days. Romania\u2019s investigation has already confirmed that one of them was a Russian Shahed drone,\u201d the country\u2019s Foreign Minister Maxime Pr\u00e9vot said, adding that 300 Belgium troops are based in Romania as part of NATO\u2019s eastern flank force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A series of drone incursions\u00a0by Russia and Ukraine\u00a0have hit Romania and other NATO members since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>#Romania #scrambles #F16 #jets #shoot #suspected #Russian #Shahed #type #drone<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Romania shot down\u00a0a suspected &hellip;
