Booted out: Scottish Rugby has axed Alex Williamson

Chief executive Alex Williamson has been sacked by Scottish Rugby after just 18 months in the role.

The shock dismissal of the former CEO of Goodwood Estate and House of Fraser comes after a probe into his conduct in the position.

Scottish Ruby announced in May this year that he had been put on a period of extended leave without offering any explanation.

According to STV Sport, his behaviour is understood to have involved an undisclosed relationship with a Scottish Rugby employee.

Williamson was appointed as successor to Mark Dodson in September 2024, beginning his new job in January 2025.

Confirming the news, John McGuigan, chairman of Scottish Rugby, said: “The board of Scottish Rugby has today dismissed Alex Williamson from his position as chief executive with immediate effect.

“His dismissal follows the conclusion of an independent investigation into matters that were brought to the board’s attention earlier this year.

“In light of the investigation findings, the board of Scottish Rugby concluded that the CEO’s conduct had fallen significantly below the standards we set as an organisation.”

Chief financial officer David White is set to become interim chief executive while the search begins for Williamson’s successor.
