Former Monaco head coach Sebastien Pocognoli has emerged as the likely to successor to Steve Clarke and his appointment could be confirmed this week.
The Scottish FA is pursuing the 39-year-old Belgian, who left Monaco at the end of last season. In 2024-45 he led Union Saint-Gilloise to the Belgian league title, its first for 90 years.
He is now among the candidates spoken to by Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell and chief football officer Craig Mulholland.
Clarke ended his seven-year tenure after Scotland failed to make progress from the initial stages of the World Cup.
A replacement is thought to be imminent, with a four-game group of fixtures in the Nations Cup starting in Slovenia on 26 September. The first game at Hampden will be against Switzerland three days later.
Pocognoli’s playing career, included spells with West Bromwich Albion and Brighton & Hove Albion, and he earned 13 caps for Belgium.
He would become the second foreign coach of the Scotland men’s team, after German Berti Vogts. Jon Dahl Tomasson and Kasper Hjulmand have also been linked with the position.
It is thought Steven Naismith, who served as one of his assistants, will stay on.
