Culture setback as The Skinny magazine closes – Daily Business

Final issue: The Skinny has closed

The Skinny, published by community interest company Radge Media, has ceased publication in a blow to the Scottish arts scene.

Radge, which also publishes Fest and GNAW magazines, issued a statement saying that the latest issue would be the last after 20 years as a monthly arts, music, film and culture freesheet, based in Edinburgh and distributed in cities across Scotland.

“We are devastated that our work has come to such a sudden end,” it said. ” We have not been immune to the economic difficulties in the Scottish arts and despite our very best efforts, funding pressures across the sector, rising costs and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis have contributed to an increasingly challenging situation.

“The Skinny is a key asset to Scottish cultural life, but it was produced by a small team with all the challenges that entails – we did the best we could with the resources at our disposal, and we can only apologise to our readers, colleagues and advertisers for making such a sudden exit, but we have been unable to find a way to continue the work at this time.”

Radge Media CIC is understood to have had about a dozen employees who published 350,000 magazines a year.

After launching in 2005, The Skinny closed during the pandemic lockdowns, but was restarted after a Crowdfunder raised more than £16,000.
