Once described as the best inland site for a golf course, the never-completed Gleneagles West – or gWest – adjacent to one of the country’s most famous destinations, has been put up for sale.
Known as Scotland’s “ghost course”, it was seen as rival to neighbouring Gleneagles when United Arab Emirates businessman Mahdi al-Tajir had it built in 2009.
The 18-hole, 7,300-yard layout includes an unfinished, domed clubhouse, inspired by Colen Campbell, a noted 18th-century Scottish architect, that will never host a celebratory round.
Tajir, the owner of the nearby Highland Spring bottled water company, has put the 639-acre site near Blackford, Perthshire, on the market.
A guide price has not been disclosed by selling agent Knight Frank.
It was the architect, David McLay Kidd, who remarked on its location as being the best for an inland golf course, but it will almost certainly be developed for residential and tourism use in line with the original plan. There is permission to build 170 houses, a hotel and unspecified leisure and entertainment facilities
Euan Kelly, partner at selling agent Knight Frank Edinburgh, said: “It is incredibly rare that an opportunity like gWest becomes available.
“We’re expecting a huge amount of interest from across the globe in what could be a once-in-a-lifetime asset: a substantial consented resort development site, with a golf course designed by a celebrated architect, in one of Scotland’s most prestigious leisure locations.
“While the bold ambitions for the site have yet to fully come to fruition, a sale could see them take an important step forward and add another destination to Scotland’s — and Perthshire’s — strong tourist offering.”
Tajir, a Bahrain-Emirati businessman became the first UAE ambassador to the UK in the 1970s.
