There is no shortage of ways to enjoy Greece. You can spend your days on the beach, visit ancient ruins, eat your way through local tavernas or simply sit somewhere with a good view and watch the world go by. But if you have already visited Greece or want your first trip to feel a little different, it can be worth changing the way you approach your holiday.
Rather than trying to fit as much as possible into a short break, think about making your trip slower, more comfortable and more flexible. A few changes to the way you travel can give you a completely different experience of the country.

Staying in a luxury villa for an extended period is one way to experience Greece without feeling as though you are constantly on the move. Instead of unpacking your bags every few days, you can choose one area and really get to know it.
A private villa also gives you a level of freedom that can be difficult to find in a traditional hotel. Depending on the high end property you rent, you might have your own pool, garden, kitchen and outdoor dining space. You can have a slow breakfast at home, head to the beach when you feel like it and return in the afternoon without worrying about hotel schedules.
A longer stay gives you the chance to do things differently, too. Visit the same bakery twice, find your favourite restaurant or spend an afternoon chatting with people in a nearby village. You may even discover that some of the places you enjoy most are not the ones that appeared at the top of your travel itinerary.
When looking for a villa, think about more than just how impressive the property looks. Its location matters just as much. Check how far it is from shops, restaurants and beaches, and consider whether you will need a car to get around.
Look After Your Eyes While You Explore
It is easy to forget about your eyes when you are thinking about flights, accommodation and things to see. However, the Greek sunshine can be very strong, particularly during the summer months. If you are going to be outside for much of the day, taking a few simple precautions can help you stay comfortable.
Bring a good pair of sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection and wear them when you are walking around, sightseeing or spending time near the sea. The glare from the water and bright surfaces can make the sunlight feel particularly intense. A hat with a decent brim can provide some extra shade as well.
If you wear contact lenses, make sure you take enough supplies with you and continue following your normal care routine. It is also sensible to pack a pair of glasses in case your eyes become irritated or your lenses become uncomfortable.
Small things like these can make a difference when you are spending hours outdoors. You want to be thinking about the view, the food and where you are going next, rather than dealing with sore or tired eyes. If you do experience irritation or pain, make sure to see your trusted expert optician after the trip.
Leave Room for Unplanned Experiences
There is nothing wrong with having a list of places you want to visit, but try not to make your itinerary so full that there is no room for anything unexpected. Greece is a country where taking things slowly can be part of the experience.
Leave an afternoon free to explore somewhere you have not planned to visit. Stop at a roadside café if it catches your attention. Take a different route back to your accommodation or ask a local where they would go for dinner.
You could also consider travelling outside the busiest part of summer. Spring and early autumn can offer a different atmosphere, and depending on where you go, you may find it easier to explore without dealing with the same level of heat and crowds.
Sometimes the most memorable part of a Greek holiday is not the famous attraction you carefully planned to visit. It might be a quiet beach, a meal that lasted for hours or an evening spent watching the sunset from somewhere you happened to find along the way.
