A US medical technology company supporting the development of next-generation patient monitoring technologies is more than doubling its research and development team in Edinburgh after investing £8.7 million in new offices in the city.

Spacelabs Healthcare, part of Nasdaq-listed OSI Systems, is a global developer of patient monitoring and diagnostic cardiology technology.

It has had a presence in Edinburgh for almost four decades and has moved from Moray Place to a refurbished modern office at Edinburgh Park, which is four times bigger.

The investment will create 30 jobs, primarily in software engineering and cybersecurity, taking the team from 22 to 52.

Further growth is already being considered, with Spacelabs anticipating the potential to expand its Edinburgh operation by a further 20-30% as the business continues to invest in its global technology capabilities.

The company’s investment is supported by a £3.1m grant from Scottish Enterprise whose chief executive Adrian Gillespie who told Daily Business the company was “a great fit in terms of what are are trying to achieve in the medtech sector. It is a really exciting one for us.”

He joined Ajay Mehra, president and CEO of OSI Systems and Wilson Constantine, president of Spacelabs Healthcare, at the official opening of the new suite of offices and laboratory.

Mr Mehra spoke about the attraction of Edinburgh for his company, particularly in terms of hiring highly-trained staff.

“Edinburgh is a great place to invest to advance our patient monitoring and diagnostic cardiology technologies.

“The depth of software engineering, cybersecurity and technology talent available here, alongside the strength of the university pipeline, made the decision to expand in Edinburgh a natural one.”

Mr Constantine said: “We were concerned about how quickly we could hire people but it turned out not to be an issue. The quality of applicants is very high.
